SMART Recovery rather than AA

Got this from Roadhunter on another thread. It is called SMART Recovery. SMART RecoveryŽ | Help with Alcohol, Drug, and Other Addictions. Wow it looks like the place for me!!! I am not much into AA. Seems to religious to me.
Thanks Roadhunter.

I did SMART for almost a year a couple years ago. Not f2f but online and I really liked it. I think they have alot of tools to help with everything imaginable.
Try it and see what you think.

Let's try not to mention AA, lol...

Here's another site you might appreciate, if you haven't found it already:

Thanks Doorknob. Sometimes I think that this board is beating the dog on the AA thing. I figure there are so many folks on this board that come and go. The subject of AA vs. anything else is going to come up often so I guess to me I don't mind.

Well, I read the "Tools" section and some of the essays. I have done REBT therapy in the past, and found it very useful. Frankly, I think that anyone could benefit from thinking clearly, and from challenging whatever self-defeating beliefs they may harbour.

I think that addiction is very complex, and that it affects all areas of our being: mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. I have found that tending to all of these parts of myself in tandem helps much more than focusing on just one or two.

That's just my experience... I certainly don't think that it's a matter of either/or. It's good to have options, and to make use of them depending on our needs

i'm in AA right now and I must say, I feel totally trapped! I'm working the steps with a sponsor and it is SO religious and SO cultish. I hate it. I cannot wait to be done with the steps so I can drift away from the program completely!!!!

BG, you shouldn't feel trapped. You don't have to be there, right?

OK, if this turns into another one of those 'for me or agin me' AA threads, I'm gonna die.

BG I'm not in AA, but it makes sense to me, if you want to stay in AA and do all 12 steps, that maybe you just need a different sponsor or even a different group...one that would be more comfortable for you?

If, on the other hand, you're not sure at all about the 12 step model, then maybe something like SMART or any of the other recovery models might be for you?

Whatever works
D
