Does anyone watch "Sober House"?
Man, that show pis**s me off! It is a total joke. Most of the celebrities who live there just seem to want to A) Be on TV and B) See how much they can get away with. And the lady who runs the house, Jen, is the worst codependent of all and just comes off as desperate to be part of the "gang." I really see no "recovery" going on there at all.
The funny thing is, AH never misses an episode. He sits there and mocks the whole show and basically seems to feel the way I do about nobody really getting help and the whole thing being a joke. I don't understand how he seems to have so much insight and intelligence about addiction and then not be able to relate it to his own life. That pis**s me off too.

If one of them gets help, then God be with them.
They are actors/entertainers though and most are past their prime so far as careers go. I do believe they are ALL addicts of some type. However, this gives them a stage to get in front of an audiance again, and they are PAID to be on there. Imagine getting paid to get therapy....
One thing I notice in the show (on MTV, so come on), is that most of them are extremely entitled, immature and self-centered. From my readings those are traits of active addicts that are at the core of their issues. The drug of choice is a way to deal with those underlying demons....IMHO, but I ma NOT an A, so this is just my opinion from readings and talking with former A's.

I watch it but with a HUGE grain of salt.
Drew Pinsky was on the Howard Stern show recently and got into a very interesting discussion with addict and comedian Artie Lange who called him out about how TV rehab and sober living is different from actual rehab and sober living. It's like night and day, and Pinsky agreed.

Yep I watch it. Seth "shifty" Binzer is my xabf made over except Seth isn't as "full of himself" as my x is/was...he was also a crack addict and I can see the similarities...makes me want to vomit.

OMG--I heard that show where Dr. Drew was on Howard Stern (I love him--LOL). Artie is such a train wreck...can't even imagine where HIS bottom is.
And I totally agree about Rodney King. I never thought I would look at him as an inspiration, but I do now. He is very brave and trying so hard...the only one who seems to be. And of course, he hardly gets any airtime because apparently true sobriety does not equal ratings.
Dr. Drew does have some intelligent things to say, but at times I question his motives and his decisions---like letting Jen run "Sober House." LOL!!

Not sure what Rodney King's rap sheet is, but it's just nice to see him somewhat serious about sobriety unlike all the others.

I for one watch the show , and do find it alarming that some things are aloud , but hey if i dont like it its as simple as a click of the remote away , Maybe some should change the channel . It is TV .. and you can take from it what you like , thats how i see it , And I for one had a big Aha moment from last weeks show w/ what Rodney did as far as letting go of that horrible nite he was beaten to inches from his death , Hes not a wife beater btw , Hes done drugs and booze , and made a driving mistake and was almost killed from the actions of cops . sorry to sound witchy , just my 2 cents is all ..

I don't watch any of the sober and/or recovery TV shows; I just find them boring.....I thought they'd at least be worth some time as being entertainment, but for me..............just BORING.....
Sooooooooo, instead of talking about this particular show, here's just a brief synopsis of Rodney King's life w/the law.........:
On the night of March 2, 1991, Rodney King and two passengers, Byrant Allen and Freddie Helms, were driving west on the Foothill Freeway. The three men had spent the night watching a basketball game and drinking malt liquor at a friend’s house in Los Angeles. The presumptive evidence, from a blood-alcohol level test taken 5 hours after the incident, when King registered just under the legal limit, is that as King drove his blood alcohol level was approximately 0.19—nearly two and a half times the legal limit in California. At 12:30 AM, Officers Tim and Melanie Singer, of the California Highway Patrol, spotted King’s car speeding, and they pursued King, claiming the subsequent freeway chase reached speeds in excess of 100 mph. According to King’s own statements, he refused to pull the car over because a DUI would violate his parole for a previous robbery conviction. The chase continued through residential streets at speeds ranging from 55 to 80 mph.
When the chase finally ended, King was tasered, struck with a batons, stomped and kicked, all by 'officers of the law' ....the result of this beating was he suffered a fractured facial bone, a broken leg, and numerous bruises and lacerations, after which there were trials, bith state amnd federal, for both him and the officers involved......after the trials there were numerous riots both for and against (both King and the officers).
After all this, King was awarded $3.8 million in a civil case and used some of the proceeds to start a hip hop music label, Straight Alta-Pazz Recording Company. In May 1991, he was arrested on suspicion of trying to run over a vice officer who allegedly found him with a transvestite prostitute in Hollywood. In 1993, King entered an alcohol rehabilitation program and was placed on probation after crashing his vehicle into a block wall in downtown Los Angeles. In July 1995, he was arrested by Alhambra police, who alleged that he hit his wife with his car, knocking her to the ground. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail after being convicted of hit and run. On August 27, 2003, King was arrested again for speeding and running a red light while under the influence of alcohol. He failed to yield to police officers and slammed his SUV into a house, breaking his pelvis.

I began watching Sober House in hopes that some of these "stars" of the show would hopefully make the right choices after they left "Treatment." But unfortunately, it seems that this isn't the case.
I think this show is a fantastic example of the things NOT to do fresh out of treatment. On their, what was it, maybe second day or so out of Treatment, they go Clubbing? WTF???? It was obvious right then, to me, who was willing to go to any length, change the people, places and things in order to maintain their Sobriety, Rodney King. Yeah, he wanted to get out and have a night on the town like the others did after being in Treatment for a month. But he made a better choice, he went to dinner with Jen, my mind just went blank on the big guy, the other one who was working at the Treatment Center, and the others in Recovery who are offering their ESH to these "stars."
A Sober House is a place where the Residents are given some basic rules to follow, such as a curfew, and worked back into the "real world" but at the same time, have a safe haven to go to where it should be drug and alcohol free. I think Jen did what she could in the situation, her and (what IS his name?) both kept telling everyone that this was not a good idea, repeatedly. They couldn't go locking them in their rooms and forbidding them to go.
Mary's disasterous relationship is a perfect example of how staying in an unhealthy relationship can hold someone back in their Recovery. I find myself wanting to throw something at the tv, wishing it would hit this so called manager/boyfriend of hers. I think he just wants to keep her drinking and doing Xanax so she'll continue to do porn and make him money. By having her clean and working towards Recovery, she's just speaking up for herself a little too much for him to be comfortable with. He may loose her altogether if she continues to stay clean.
I bet if everyone wouldn't freak and focus on Seth when he pulls another one of his stunts, he would stop doing it. What I see him doing is a desperate cry for constant attention. When he kept sending them messages basically saying guess where I am and then go to such and such location and await further instructions, that sh*t was crazy! The longer people feed into this game, the longer he is going to continue to do it. It's sad though, he seems like if he could get himself together and put down the persona of a bad a$$, he's probably a very sweet guy.
And I think Andy Dick's picture needs to be next to the definition of "Co Dependent" in the Webster's Dictionary of Addiction and Addictive Behaviors, if it existed.
But, I will continue to tune in, in hopes that we watch at least Rodney continue on the right path. When he went to the location of where he was beaten and let go, I had tears in my eyes. I was quite touched. That's what I call doing work on one's self, even if it means feeling many painful issues. What he basically said was Let Go and Let God.
Out of all these so called Stars, the one "ordinary guy" the alcoholic who made some poor choices while he was out one night drinking and driving is in the positon to teach millions of people by his example. God Bless Him.
