Welcome A lot of us have been exactly where you are right now, it can get better. Posting here is a great start! Maybe find something else to do during the time you usually relax with your after work drink, I found that changing my habits were so critical in staying away from 'drinking thinking', I was very very habitual in the times I drank.
Well, I can say you have come to the right place. The first thing you need to do is make for certain that you are ready to stop drinking. The second thing I would do is get rid of any alcohol you may still have in your house. From there, it is one day at a time. Keep posting and reading here. This is a very good support structure for those of us that need help fighting this terrible addiction.
Welcome to SR.

Your not alone, there are lots of us just starting. I'd agree with C23 about ridding your place of alcohol. I know I have 12 beer and 8 bottles of home-made wine in my "stock room" right now, I'm going to try and sell it all to friends before the cravings start. If I can't do that, I'm going to pour it all down the sink. Why not stop today, I wish you all the best.

Welcome to our world.
Everyone here is trying to quit whether it has been 1 day or years and years.
You said you used to do everything without drinking so try to recapture that. It just sorta creeps in on us until we are using more and more.
Deciding you don't want it to take over more and more of your life is half the battle.
If you come to that decision you will be able to do it and everyone here will give you the support you need when the going gets tough.
Good luck.

Hi there
Not a fourth grader Now that would have been a BIG shock if you were!
Keep coming here and read all the threads, you will pick up on something. Keep posting too. I came back on and off for 6 months from joining, mostly drunk, and searched the internet for real life stories of people getting sober thinking how the hell do they do it...sip sip hehe
Seriously though i got outside help 4 months ago and have been sober since, attended my first AA meeting yesterday because i wanted to and am going again today, it can be done!

I was a specialist in relapse, til I got six months sober and thought I had it licked... I'm now on day three and the withdrawal is so bad I'm going to the hospital, hoping they'll give me something to get thru the next three days. If I can get past that I can make it.
Get medical help if you can't get past the first few days, and give AA a good try too, it helped me a lot in early recovery. The main thing is to get safely past detox. To get the alcohol out of your system so you can start to see what sobriety has to offer - and it's far better than continuing to drink. I should know... but I want to be sober - again - and stay that way so I'm getting the help I need cause I can't do this myself, at least, not at first.

nobodyknows: i was in your shoes a little while back.. i had a job (that i HATED) 2end shift.. if i did not have to work the next day it was AUTOMATIC.. started drinking RIGHT AWAY.. never thought it would stop. got to the point I HAD TO! alcohol abuse can and WILL kill you.. you can do it.(i had to quit that job) you have to WANT IT BAD ENOUGH TO GO TO ANY LENGTH to stay sober!
Omigosh, I remember feeling totally overwhelmed when I KNEW I had to stop drinking.
I could not imagine getting through a single evening without drinking.
Take small steps and just concentrate on getting through each hour, each day. You will get stronger and it will get easier.

Hey nobodyknows,
It's great to see you here. I just joined yesterday, went out last night and am picking up the pieces again today, so I know how you feel. I checked the parking lot this morning and my car is still in one piece, so I'm starting fresh today on trying to hang with you and get sober. After that, it's a whole new way of life, but we need to get sober first. BTW, I'm from the Windy City, but live in CA. now. Boy, I don't miss those winters, but I do miss snow on Christmas day. My family is still in the burbs, Elmhurst, Naperville, and Schaumburg. My exwife still lives in the house we bought together so many years ago. Maybe, you could send me a couple of those great Italian Beef sandwiches. The food here in CA. is just not the same as in Chi-town. Hang in there and stay with us. We're in this together.

nobody knows, I too would immediately have a drink when I got home.
I still do have a drink right away, just not alcohol.
I've been buying multiple jugs of 100% fruit juices.
When I get home, first thing I do is make a drink in my big beer mug!
Throw in some ice, and mix up one, a little of this juice, a splash of another, top it up with cranberry juice,,,,Stir it up.... mmmmmm!
In fact I still have a drink in my hands all night long, just like the old days, but non alcoholic.
My personal fav creation is
1/3 mango
1/3 cranberry
1/3apple
-with a little splash of orange juice to top it up
Stir well!
I must say after doing this for the last 3 weeks along with taking vitamins and eating well have transformed me from a pasty skinned blurry eyed drunk into a brand new man.
My eyes are clear and sparkly.
My skin looks healthy.
I can also feel all those tiny brain cells and circuits in my head (that I fried over the years) slowly reconnecting. Seriously.
Just for today I will not drink.
You can do it too nobodyknows!
