raising the bottom?

What was that book about raising the bottom? As in hitting bottom, but raising where that is.

Has anyone read it and would they recommend it?

from jherzanek: "...and although it isn't easy, it is the one thing that works."

it is the one thing that works to what??
get an alcoholic to stop drinking and find recovery?
there is no 100% proven system for achieving that!

As a codie - I have to be careful of thinking that ANYTHING that I do will make an alkie stop drinking. I can't have those kinds of expectations. That kind of magical thinking leads me to bad habits of mind that derail my recovery. I am simply not that powerful.

Of course, to stop enabling the alcoholic is an essential step in getting myself off the codie roller coaster - and if it helps the alcoholic well that's great - but for me, my motivation needs to be very clear and focused on my own recovery and mental health!

peace,
b

"No More Letting Go" also talks about raising the addict's bottom.

We raise the bottom every time we do not enable the addict.
We raise the bottom every time we do not allow the addict to put the blame on other things but gently remind him/her that drugs/alcohol is their primary problem.
We raise the bottom when we get educated on addiction and how we can stop interacting with it in an unhealthy way.

And there are other much more proactive things we can do to raise the bottom. All these books go into more detail, and I recommend anything you can get your hands on.
