Frustration is wanting what you can't have.
I was in a small shop last week and saw a plaque that read, "Happiness is wanting what you have." I thought that was really true. I then thought about it some more and realized that if that's what happiness is, then frustration is wanting what you can't have.
What do active addicts want that they can't have? Drugs and a relatively normal happy life. Those are mutually exclusive.
What do codependents want that they can't have? Control over the addict and the situation. Sometimes addicts stop using and turn their lives around, but we can't control that and can't guarantee that. What I wanted is control and a guarantee.
So, what do you want that you can't have?
