A Christmas Miracle
While my 2 kids and I were gone for 2 weeks visiting my family my XAH "lost" my younger kid's dog. I say "lost" because of the circumstances, of which I won't go into....just think active alcoholic behavior, and the fact that he detested that dog. Of course my child was crushed when she found out and later said, "I don't know what to think Mom, he didn't put up any signs in the neighborhood and my dog always stuck around. I held her as she wept.
The kid then comes up with the idea to rescue a pug and starts researching on the internet and comes to me with several applications. After many false starts and leads, and tears of disappointment from my kid, we finally got to meet a prospective match. This dog was a 3 year old -puppy mill reject rescued by a group that works with rescuing puppy mill dogs. She was rejected because she didn't have big enough litters. If you don't know how puppy mill dogs are treated do a google search and if you love dogs have some tissues handy.
Yesterday was the day to meet this animal. After a very long drive and some mishaps which made me think we wouldn't make it, and made my kid cry again, we finally met the dog. (I had been preparing the kid for the fact that the dog could be wrong for us...aggressive or too many emotional issues from the horror of her puppy mill life.... hmmm, just like my little kid's issues because of her father's untreated alcoholism)
The foster mom had 2 rescue dogs she was rehabilitating, plus her 2 dogs and a bunch of cats. My 2 kids and I walked in the front door and were greeted by a very large and happy Great Dane and the other dogs. In the back was this tiny 14 pound pug. Once the pug saw the 11 year old she made a bee-line for my kid totally ignoring me and my other kid.
The 11 year old dropped to her knees and the pug enthusiastically greeted her like my kid was her long lost owner. My kid then sat on the floor and the pug crawled in her lap and if a dog could hug someone that is what this dog did to her, as well as smother her with little puggy kisses. This happened during all the confusion of entering the home, and happened the entire visit. The dog was glued to this kid, the dog was emotionally healthy, and this was a match made in heaven.
I stood there with tears in my eyes, the foster mom had tears in her eyes and all I could do was offer a prayer of thanks to my higher power for giving this littlle kid this amazing gift.
On the ride home my kid said, "Mom, I felt like that dog knew me. I felt like she was trying to ask me "Where have you been? I have been waiting for you." I agreed with my kid, and said I think you are right!
She gets her dog in a couple of weeks and what a joyous day that will be.
Merry Christmas Everyone!

Chrysalis, thanks so much for that story. Our dogs are rescues too, and had the same reactions to us. And of course, as a pug mom myself, if I can ever give you a hand with interpreting their strange little behaviors, I'm happy to oblige! I can't imagine life life without one now. Blessings to you & your kids this season!
