Short term memory issues?

My BF is 6 weeks sober (he was almost 2 years, relapsed this summer).

When he was drinking, he used to talk a lot of nonsense, repeat himself a lot, contradict himself, get confused, etc.

But now, I notice he still seems to have some memory issues.

He will ask me something, and then two days later ask me the same thing...when I say - we talked about this - he looks at me like he truly has no idea that we did.

It doesn't so much bother me.....more just wondering if this is a temporary thing, or a longer term issue.

my AH does the samething- drunk or sober. It has effected his brain. I am glad your ABF is sober- maybe his memory will get better with continued sobriety. My AH hasn't been sober a long enough period to test that theory.

My husband was told that this would improve over time, with sobriety of course. But it was still a problem almost a year into it.

my now XABF forgot our relationship the last 6 months. he says its a blur and that he wasnt sure now how he felt about me because he is not understanding any of the emotions he feels now. he is 45days sober. its hurtful. but part of my recovery is stop being hurt by this person emotionally. i still love him i know what i want for the future but if he's forgotten us and our life in sobriety then what is the future? i hear and have read its normal to have short term memory loss. that emotions are confusing and that memories are blurred together or lost. hopefully your A's short term memory gets better. good luck!

There's something called Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) that can last up to 2 years. Short term memory problems are one of the symptoms.

Plenty of info on this site as well as the rest of the web about it.
