Newly sober!

I have been drinking on and off for about 20 years. Mostly binge drinking, can't stop when I start and hiding it from friends and family, etc. Last night was my last straw, I got really drunk and told my husband that I wanted to quit. He is extremely supportive. I guess I don't know where to begin...any suggestions would be great! Thank you!

Hi & welcome Newlysober!

You've already begun, sista! Making a decision is key to quit and reaching out to others who identify and relate to you is essential. This forum is great. People really do care and they come from where you've been! For me, I was a binge drinker for years and would sometimes have a lot of times in between binges (2 wks to 2 mos) but the past years the binges lasted longer, the sober time shorter and before I knew it I was a 24/7 alcoholic drinker! I'm so glad your husband is supportive as that will help in your recovery.

My suggestion --- keep posting, reading and responding! If you're open to checking out AA in your city... go for it. You don't have to share while you're there and theres no pressure. It's just a bunch of drunks getting and staying sober, one day at a time with the help of another recovering alcoholic!

Good luck and keep reaching out!
Hugs xoxox,

hi chick..Takes a lot of courage to say "cant stop when i start" and that is probably the most important thing you can do.

Admitting to myself and others that i have a problem with booze was the foundation stone to my recovery. The start if you like.

These are some of the things i did in the beginning that were suggetsed to me.

1. Go the the doctor...explain whats been happening and what you intend to do about it.
2. Try to eat well if you can and drink plenty of water.
3. Try to stay away from stressfull situations...hard sometimes but important.
4. Dont go to bars....even for soft drinks or coffee....if i go the the barbers eventually im gonna get a hair cut!
5. Try aa and take a look at the twelve steps or read the big book.
6. important....have regular contact with other drinkers in recovery.
7. Take it easy...be good to yourself...have some quiet time to read or just chill out.

These suggetions helped me in the begining.

I wont suggest its easy because sometimes it can get uncomfortable but a time will come when you dont want a drink.

My life is so much happier and fulfilling without alcohol and i dont miss it.

Let us know how your getting on.....god bless

Hi and welcome.
It's hard but I just made a start, the first day was quiet easy but it's been on and off hard since then, sometimes more than others.
I am so proud of myself though, and thats what keeps you going.
All the best, it's not an easy thing to do... but it's the best thing to do!

Thanks to everyone for posting your suggestions. I am actually relieved to start this journey of a sober life. I'm sure I will have other emotions later on...This is definitely a great support and I will check back daily!!
