Key word of the day
Key word of the day
Scaredy's feelings thread gave me this idea.
As a rambling space cadet, I find it useful to focus on one word or concept to clear up my scattered brain. Keeping it in the forefront of my conscience, those words act as affirmations and give me direction - and relief!
Lately I've also discovered that it's extra useful to pick a word as soon as I begin my day, and to meditate on it for a minute or two. Doing so seems to help keep me on track, and off my typical winding tangents. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, or if negativity starts to creep in, I shift my attention back to my key word for the day.
Here is something I wrote myself, rounding up knowledge I found through experience, in books, the web and uhmmm common sense
Crash course on affirmations:
1. Whatever we focus on will expand. If we focus on love, love will become our background emotion. Similarly, if we focus on fear, we'll become fearful.
Scary statistic: any given person thinks, on average, 100,000 thoughts every day. It's estimated that up to 95% of those thoughts are *negative* - 75% for non-depressed individuals. That is a LOT of negativity! No wonder a lot of people hold defeatist, angry, helpless attitudes.
2. A single POSITIVE affirmation has the power to cancel out thousands of negative affirmations, if we wholeheartedly believe in it. It's not about "faking it til you make it", it's about truly believing.
3. A POSITIVE affirmation is phrased in present tense and is devoid of the words "no" or "not".
This: I am courageous
NOT this: I am not afraid --> the focus is still on fear
This: I am free of alcohol today
NOT this: I won't drink today --> the focus is on deprivation
This: I ROCK because.... blah blah
NOT this: I suck! --> No I don't! This is a false, irrational belief. Surely there is ONE good thing about me?
4. A positive affirmation can be a single, carefully chosen word.
My key words this week have been FREEDOM and HUMILITY.
What are yours?

Patience~ Thanks for this post, it truly does help to change what we say to ourselves and phrase it differently.
BTW, I don't know if any of you have read the book The Secret, but that's one of the basic principles of the book. The power of positive thinking over negative and how it helps attract what we want instead of not want.

Sylvia Plath often used one I like : "I Am. I Am"
It's in the Bell Jar and she used it personally with her troubles.
I find it comforting and very meditating.
(I was going to say "Mattycake", but I thought that would be cheating... )

Hello! :-)
My key word would have to be Striven, although its been that for ages. I have a fascination with tree's, being so random, but at the same time much alike. Bit like us really. I like it so much because of the explanation in my thesaurus (To make a great effort) and i used it as the title for a tree im drawing. :-)

@ Mariposa - Yup, I've seen that documentary and enjoyed it. I've been interested in this topic for a very long time - the interrelation between spirituality, psychology and physics.
@ Ajaxy - You are NOT a Mattycake You ARE a raccoon - an adorable one!
@ Astro - Thanks so much for your support and kindness :ghug3

This is just like you Matty. You come up with this great thread then you take the best word, acceptance
There is a word that goes hand in hand with acceptance in fact acceptance is what gives the word it's real power.
My word for the day is truth.
Truth and acceptance :ghug3
