Well I got some MAJOR news...

We found out July 4th that my Wife is pregnant. This is our first time around and I'm bugged out to say the least.

Happy and terrified at the same time. Happy because we've been trying to have a baby. Terrified because I didn't think it would happen so soon and now our world just got flipped upside down.

God this is such an opportunity for me to really make a commitment to stop drinking.

Pray for me please.

Congratulations! Thoughts and prayers going out for you.....

12 years ago when our first child was born, my wife asked me to quit chewing tobacco and drinking so that I'd preserve my life for our children.

Nine years later I made the commitment to stop. By that time I'd injured our children quite a few times during drinking "accidents" (I now call it abuse) and every day I put their lives in my hands. The marriage didn't last either. Thankfully God protected my family while I selfishly indulged in my disease.

Yep, this would be a great opportunity to achieve sobriety. Please take it.

"Pray for me please."

Will do. I think that's fantastic news. I can definitely understand being scared but this has the potential to be the best thing that has ever happened to you. I don't have kids so I'm probably not the best person to give advice, but I wish the best for all three of you. :o)

SoBearish! Congratulations! Your life will change forever. If there ever was a reason to sober up, this is it.. My wife and I tried and tried but couldn't have our own. (This led to some heavy drinking) We adopted a boy and a girl from Kazahkstan, and it's been a whirl-wind ever since! (Major reason for me to stop my heavy drinking) They love you without condition, and i owe it to them to be a good sober father!

Hey Sobearish!!!!!! now slow down!

parents aren't perfect....just focus on getting sober for now. I was sober for my son from the age of 5 to 20 (i did drink a number of times but not around him and not very often...they count but you know what i mean)

I still made major errors and some of them were during the 7 years straight i was sober at one time.

ITS OK...relax and enjoy the years...there is a power greater than me to help right things when i make those mistakes...and no such thing as perfect parents.

Don't panic and like Ananda said "parents aren't perfect." I know you can do this, but its got to be for you first and then if you want you can add the wife and baby into it. If its not for you first then you'll have a harder time. My son is 5 years old and I am finally done with my drinking. I'm 41 years old and I am now growing up. He wasn't able to make me sober, but I do like myself as a mother more now then I did before and I like myself as a person a whole better too. Any ways, a big congratulations to you and of course, you'll be in my prayers.

Congratulations!!!
Just think, you could be sober for this child's entire life. Now THAT would be a blessing to you all!
But for now, just focus on one day at a time, throw yourself into recovery and be good to your wife. This is the start to a wonderful journey!!!

Well, CONGRATULATIONS! And RELAX!

I have a 7 year old son and a 4 year old daughter. Being a father is, without a doubt, the best part of my life. The anticipation, their arrival into the world, their incredible love and joy. It's impossible to prepare for everything - just learn what you can and do your best. I make mistakes but I think even they know that Dad is far from perfect but I am still their hero.

In my case, fatherhood and quitting drinking by willpower alone was not enough to achieve sobriety. It was just a matter of time before drinking became my obsession, my priority again. I had to reach a point where I was willing to do "whatever it takes". I hope you find what is right for you.

Prayers & best wishes!

Hey SoBer. Many congrats to you and your wife on the coming of a child. May God bless you infinitely as there is no greater gift than that of a child. You wll be in my prayers.

If you would like I could send you my pamphlet on child rearing. Oh darn, that was for chia pet grooming. I forgot that chilluns don't come with care and feeding instructions. Well, good luck anyway.
