First Timer
Hi Jim - your emotions are so raw in the beginning, I understand just how you feel. After drinking almost my whole life, I literally had to learn to live again. Don't expect too much of yourself in the beginning - you'll go through many phases as you get well, and sometimes you'll be discouraged. Just keep on going with it - you'll find a whole new you will emerge. When I first found SR I was drinking very heavily, and continued to for a few months after. I kept reading everyone's stories, though, and I knew I wanted to get well like they had. Finally I had the courage to lay down the alcohol - & my daily reading on here keeps me strong. I've even relapsed and been given support and love, no judgmental speeches. We can help you, and you can help us with your story and your progress. Love, Joanie
Welcome to SR!
I didn't know HOW to live without numbing myself with something...as a child it was food, went through a drinking stage, then went to opiates. All that was easy to kick, for me, but then I found crack....and it took me down hard and fast.
I didn't join on this site for months, but lurked around and read tons of posts...especially on the substance abuse forum. I eventually logged on and have met tons of friends here from all over the world.
Is it EASY living life without drugs? Well, my life isn't a bed of roses, thanks to a lot of consequences I brought on myself when I was using. But at almost 16 months clean, my life is HELLUVA lot better than any day when I was using.
Stick around, read other posts, and ask questions. 12-step meetings are a great place to start (I actually got more from AA than NA, but that's just me), but the people here are invaluable.
Hugs and prayers!
Amy

Hi, nice to meet you.
I give you a lot of credit just for facing this disease, that's the first step in getting to recovery.
Relapse is a part of many ultimately clean successful stories.
I had to end up going to an addictionologist for detox meds (suboxone) and have to go to lots and lots of NA meetings (those guys keep me smiling, keep me from cracking up, too).
Give yourself a break. We didn't develop an addiction all at once, we don't get well all at once. Do you know where the meetings are in your area?

Hi, Jim. Glad you're here. I often have the same mindset as you. I'm not even clean yet...on a slow long torturous taper.
I have to say though....most of these people with some clean time seem to really like life. Imagine that.
Good luck too you.

Yea..Its hard to think about how to live life a different way than we are use to.
It takes some time.
Hang in there.
Welcome aboard JimT. You've made a tough decision - has to be difficult, but we're behind you. You'd asked "does this (the site) work?". I might ask, "Does using drugs working for you?". Given that you're here the answer to that is rather obvious so this is certainly a positive alternative to a live out of control. And we're happy to have you.
