So I am going to my first meeting tonight. I am actually pretty excited and not real aprehanesive. b/c I know there are many like me out there, and this forum has already done so much to me in my early stages.

Any tips other than an open mind and heart? Anything to look for.

I plan on trying a few meetings to see which ones "feel" right etc.

Either way, I am excited to be on the road to a better life!

When I went to my first meeting I was a bit apprehensive and
I sat in my car-thinking "Why should I have to do this when
the people around me are the one with the problem!"

I closed my eyes took deep breathes.....(10 of them) and got
out of the car and went in.....

I got more out of listening when I first began meetings-Maybe
you would want to try that! When you are ready to share
you will know it and it feels good when you do! Everyone
is in that room together for one reason-THEM!

P.S. Guess what I found that the people around me were not
the only one with problems to work out!

I remember bravely walking in to my first Alanon meeting. I didn't know what to expect. Once the meeting began, I began to cry. Tears flowed down my face the entire meeting and I could not speak. I could barely say my name when it came time to introduce myself. I could barely choke out the words "my son is an alcoholic".

At the end of the meeting, a woman came up to me and hugged me.....then looked me straight in the eye and said "What are you going to do for YOU today?" I must have looked confused as I answered "Clean my house?" She smiled and repeated "No....what are you going to do for YOU today?" I had to give that some thought.......quite honestly I thought it was a weird question. I get it now though.

I went to my first meeting last night and I thought that exact same thing while I was getting ready to go. And actually I almost didn't go, but something inside me told me to go.

I went and I just listened, and wow everything was so familiar it is a pretty amazing gift, I wish I would have gone sooner...I met some great people after the meeting and we sat and talked for about an hour after the meeting, and I felt great when I left.
