Question New here, hope for your input

G'Day everyone,

I have been drinking for 25 years and trying to get off it for almost as long. Within a year of starting I knew I had a problem, but it took a long time for me to realise I was an alcoholic. Have most people here (at SR) recovered through AA? I would be grateful if you could post and let me know how you achieved your sobriety.

Thanks. Glad I found this site.

Welcome - I wish you a long successful recovery!

I am working the steps of AA and doing outpatient treatment for alcoholism. I started my journey in November 2007, relapsed a couple of times but never gave up. The way I see it, as long as I keep moving forward and learn from my mistakes, my sobriety will be a success.

Do you have any ideas on how you plan to stay sober? If you haven't stopped drinking yet I would suggest consulting with a Dr.

You will receive a lot of great information in this string. Listen, ask questions, keep posting and keep coming back.

Welcome NewHope, I am 3 days into recovery and was a very heavy drinker for over 30 years. It also took me a long time for me to realise I was an alcoholic. I think a lot of people here on SR go to AA and I plan on attending very soon! I can tell you this that reading this board has helped me liek never before and I've tried to quit many many times! Go back and read old posts its very insightful!!!

Again Welcome!

Welcome to our site. We have folks that have done everything you can imagine. You'll even find another newbie here that's doing some stuff with coffee. I am not an AA'er so I cant help with that. God cured me - plain and simple. Good luck to you. Keep reading and posting as there is lots of experience here.

...Welcome to our community

I too think it's wise to have an honest talk with your doctor.
De toxing from alcohol is a medical issue and can be
dangerous if you are doing it alone. Be both sober and safe.

Yes...I have been sucessfully using God and AA for a long time.
It''s an awesome experience and a fntastic way of living for me.

I'm so please you found us...Yes! you too can recover.

Hey Newhope -

Everyone here is doing what works for them. I've been sober since May 13th. I haven't attended AA because the nearest meeting to me is an hour away. I know the time and place they meet and have that as my option if this isn't working, but so far God and SR have totally taken care of my recovery. I'm still VERY new at it though. If I hit a rough spot I will have to find AA or something to help me. I say to myself that drinking is not an option.

Good luck and keep reading and feel free to post whenever you want or need to. If you have an AA nearby I would definitely look into it. I will probably end up there at some point. I don't have anything against AA except for the cost of gas.

Just my own experience, the major contributors in my recovery are:

1.) Meetings

2.) 12 steps

3.) Higher Power

Welcome to SR NewHopeJoy, I'm glad you're here seeking recovery.

After a 27 year run with alcohol, I found help and hope in the rooms of AA. But it really doesn't matter how you stay clean and sober, only that you find something that works for you.
