If you've ever felt the alcoholic in your life is a "rat"
you may not be too far off;
"Astonishing" Alcohol-Withdrawal Findings in Rats
A recently published study done in rats (Pandey SC et al. J Neurosci 2008;28:3729-3737), is an example of how far scientific knowledge about alcoholism has advanced, said Dr. Willenbring.
The study describes a novel mechanism of brain chromatin remodeling, which might help to explain alcohol withdrawal–related anxiety.
The researchers found that anxietylike behaviors in rats during withdrawal after chronic alcohol exposure were associated with an increase in histone-deacetylase (HDAC) activity in the amygdala. Adding an HDAC inhibitor to block HDAC activity during alcohol withdrawal prevented the development of alcohol withdrawal–related anxiety in the rats.
"This is just an astonishing scientific feat, and it points to a whole new range of [potential future therapeutic] possibilities," said Dr. Willenbring.
