All seems a bit much

Hi all, this seems like a great forum. I'm desperate to stop drinking but don't seem to be able. My parter of 10 years has thrown me out as a result of drinking, my business has gone **** up and I'm struggling financially. All the problems I've ever had can be linked to drink, without it I'm a loving bright guy with a hell of a lot to offer..as it is I'm a total and utter failure who is stuck in misery. But I'm still drinking! How the hell do i beat this thing?

Welcome to SR

The way many of us have found to work is by gathering the wisdom of others who have beat it. I found that wisdom through a person in AA. How I stay sober is by not picking up that first drink. If I don't pick up the first one, I will never need worry about the second one.

You may want to give a few AA meetings a try and see what they offer for support and answers.

Welcome to SR!

You are off to a start by posting here. There is a lot of experience, strength, and hope here at SR. I do hope you are able to find the solution that works for you.

There is a link to recovery programs in the alcoholism forum at the top of the threads page.

Hi Andrew,

Welcome!

Like you, I turned into someone I hated, whenever I drank.

There is hope for you to recover and there's lots of support here.

Hi Andrew...

If you line up a thousand drinks...it is not the last one that will get you..it is the first

one!

AA is helping me stay away from the first one by daily accepting I have a problem and

working on that....a whole new way of life..a wonderful life now for 22 months.

My to you!

And welcome to SR!

Love,

Sherry

Welcome! You have found a great place. First, it's safe here. Plus, you can't possibly say anything here that hasn't been heard before.

Wanting and willingness are the key, I think. Without wanting it and being willing to "take it," I don't think any program or approach will work. By coming here you have taken a big first step.

It comes from within and not from without at first. Want it so bad that you're willing to row the Atlantic to get it. Then it's just a matter of jumping in the boat. You'll find an assortment of oars here.

I could not have asked for a more decent and neighbourly welcome to any forum.

I've had a few tonight so I'll not bang on but it would be a pleasure to spend a sober evening tommorow chatting with you good people. That in itself gives me a motivation not to drink tommorow.

Welcome to a really good place for support and encouragement. You can do it one day at a time, just like everyone else. Best of luck to you and keep coming back!

hi Andrew - welcome!

for me, I couldn't have done it alone.

In one thing - you are absolutely right -
not a single person here got here because their lives were going well.

I went to the program of Alcoholics ANonymous.
And made the changes necessary, made the friends I've never suspected I could have.
Here on Soberrecovery - I've made friends I know I'll have for a long time to come - people who truly care about me - and worry about my well being.

Take your time, read all you want - you've got some decisions to make.

You are not alone. And - you're among friends.
