Tried so hard to go to my first AA meeting tonight
I'm 24 and have been trying to "tone down" my drinking on my own over the past couple months or so. The best I did was one four day stretch of soberness before hitting it hard again. I drove to a local church earlier tonight to attend a beginners AA meeting. Sat in my car for 5 minutes. Walked down the street past the church. Saw a couple of guys walking in. So nervous I wanted to throw up. Walked back to my car and went home...

If you can go to a bar or liquor store or drug house
without a problem ...
You can certainly go to a recovery program
that can give you a healthy joy filled future.
Take along a friend for support.
Get serious and get sober

I went to my first AA meeting on December 17, 2007 (coincidently 
, my sobriety date). It was so nerve-wracking getting through the door but I did it. For me, it was really a matter of putting aside all of my preconceived fears, taking a deep breath, and just doing it. Absolutely no regrets today. All of my fears were unjustified. Today, I kinda (not always ) look forward to my meetings but I always get something out of them to strengthen my sobriety. Keep trying.

Try again, in fact phone the AA central number in the phonebook and ask them to arrange for a member to contact you and go along with you.

When you want it, you will try harder.
They will wait for you if you live long enough.
Who knows...my next ride in the car while drinking could have been my last ride.
All I know is I found answers before that last ride came along.
Each person in there has been in your shoes. They fully understand your every emotion and feeling you had while sitting in the car or walking past the doorway.
It only takes one step to get through the doorway. When you master that one step you are more then halfway to a better way of life.

hey longsleeves - i go to alanon meetings and i see folks like you walk in the door all the time - that first meeting or so is tough to do for a lot of us.
i always admire those people so much for making it in.
it does get easier.

This is possibly going to sound strange to a lot of you. But, when I was drinking, it often took all the nerve I could muster up to walk into a bar by myself...until I sat down and ordered that first drink...it took a while to relax. Usually, I would have a couple at home for that "false courage".
When I started going to AA meetings, my network was already in place...having gone to some Al-Anon meetings and detox...so it was a snap, and very comfortable for me. I would also suggest that you get a friend to go with you to an open meeting. Pick up a meeting book and try to get some phone numbers of the group members. That way, you can maybe get someone to meet you outside of the next couple of meetings. It takes practice, but you'll do it.
