They talk about picking your stress..is this a bad idea?

In group we were told about trying to choose your stresses as much
as possible for the first year..to not put yourself purposefully in situations
that could be a bit too stressful for you..that those are dangerous
because they can make people new in recovery more prone to
slipping back to their drug of choice.

Well, I'm wondering if I might not be about to do that to myself.

I have an opportunity for a job interview in the morning, and I DO
need a job, but the more I think about it, the more I think it might be
a bad idea.

The job is a front desk person at this motel.

Thing is, my Dad lived there the last few years of his life,
and one afternoon I went to watch a baseball game with him
and saw him laying on the floor through the window.

Long story short, he was dead, it was a horrible day for me (family
and friends were all out of town, except for my Granpa, thank God for him),
and the more I think about sitting behind that desk..in the same office
I ran into shouting for a master key and an ambulance..or sending people
to the room that used to be my Dad's, or just sitting there alone
on slow times...the more upset I get, just thinking about it.

It might be too much to actually -do-
and I want badly to keep my sobriety.

What do you folks think?

I think the end choice is yours.
If you think it might be stressful enough to send you back to your DOC, then it's likely it
will.

Of course you have to weigh the likelihood of that up against the money for bills and food and stuff...but I think you've made your mind up, haven't ya ?.

Yeah, I think I probably have.

My thought is..that's far from the only job out there.

Even if I decide I want to do that kind of work, there are quite a few motels/
hotels around, and at least one of them is usually looking, especially now
that the college folk are off Christmas break and went back to school.

yeah - the hotel industry is such that ... they're always hiring at the holiday inn.... all over the world.

they don't exactly pay so one gives a crap, ya know? but it;s a good job for sobering up.

Hi Anodyne, I just wanted to add my two cents and say... I'm amazed you even thought about taking that job. I think you're a much tougher person then me just for considering it, let alone going through recovery right now.

I reckon most normal people wouldn't be able to cope with that, so I'm glad you're looking for other avenues. I guess it could be cathartic, but that would do my head in - no doubt.

Good luck finding something a little bit less confronting and insane,

ndz

I'm not sure what decision you should make Anondyne, but as others have said, maybe another motel/hotel would work for a job.

However, maybe working there would help you to deal with some of the grief from your Dad's death.

You are wise to weigh the pros and cons of taking the job, especially in early sobriety.
I'm glad you're sharing this stuff.
