OT: Angels on my shoulder
OT: Angels on my shoulder
I had pm'd a few people here at SR, but just wanted the rest of you to know I really do have angels watching over me
Yesterday morning, a little before 4, my restaurant was robbed while I was there. There were 5 of us at work. 2 guys came in with masks, all in black. One had a shotgun, the other had what I now have found out was a 45. They were already in the door when I realized what was going on and said "get to the back".
My buddy, Chris was in the back and for some reason I think of him as my bodyguard and feel safe around him. I was more concerned about the $104 tip money I had in my pocket. I went running to the back toward Chris, telling him "we're being robbed" and threw my money in the trash can and put a piece of cardboard over it. By then the robbers were right behind me.
They took my boss, D, into the office and had him empty the safe. The rest of us were outside the office and they had us empty our pockets. I had just met ccgirl, from here at SR, earlier that day while she was in town, had a picture of us on my camera and it was in my pocket, so then I was worried about my camera
They then put us all in the freezer, closed the door and pushed something against it. Before that, they had cocked the shotgun and AJ and Chris thought they were going to kill us. I didn't know they cocked the gun...I just saw a cartridge fall out and he picked it up.
We called 911 (Chris still had his cell phone) and they were being idiots about where we were, even though I told D the address and he gave it to them. The county cops eat in my restaurant all the time and I told them to dispatch them. Within 5 minutes, we were "rescued" by the city police and 2 of my county buddies were there.
The other store in my restaurant chain, where my friends work, was robbed the night I got back to work after going to MN....I had JUST left the store with 3 of the employees, to take them home and we figure they were waiting for me to leave. We all think it is the same guys and it is an inside job, since they go straight to the safe.
All they got was the money in the safe. My tip money was still in the trashcan and they didn't get the registers, so I also got my credit card tips. No one was ever touched and were fine.
There were so many things that could have made the situation a lot worse. If the cops HAD come in to eat (this would have been the time they normally come in), it would have been a shoot-out and a possible hostage situation. There were no customers.
My district manager came from home and said he didn't give a damn about the money, he was just concerned about us.
I am always my best in a crisis...part of what makes codie recovery a challenge. I think it is a lot from me being an ER nurse for years, but is also just part of who I am. I realize I could have been killed, but was more worried about everyone else. I don't think it's denial, just the way I am.
What I AM, though is very, very grateful. I realized, later, that there were definitely angels looking over all of us and I am so glad I have people praying for me. I had quit smoking, and am back to that, but will quit again. I did NOT think of using. I did, however, have 2 beers, but that is not a problem with me. I can not drink again for the rest of my life and have no problem. I just needed something to calm the adrenaline down, and had had only 1 hour sleep in 48 and it worked.
I went back to work tonight and it was uneventful. I kept my tip money in my bra, and put my purse in a locker. The cops are coming by more frequently and I told them they better stop going to IHOP and come back to our restaurant! Luckily, my 2 buddy county boys were within a block. My manager tonight showed me where our silent alarms are (a little late, don't ya think?) and I accidentally tripped the one in the freezer....within 5 minutes a cop was there and I had to explain what happened.
So, there's my latest drama. This is one very-happy-to-be-alive RA. And even better, I now have $600 in my "moving fund" and will be getting another $500 or more back from taxes.
Life is good.
Hugs and prayers!
Amy

Wow,
How scary for you and your co-workers.
I have never even seen a gun, except on TV.
That is one great idea about hiding the tip $$$ in the trash can, you rock girl.
Here's to those angels watching over you.
Hugs,
Colleen

o.m.g., i am just glad you all are safe & were not hurt. my sister is a manager of a finance company & yrs. ago she was robbed by a gun man. she gave him all the money & then told him to "have a nice day". can u beleive that???
Amy,
I am so glad you and your co workers are OK. Money is just money, and it can be replaced much easier than someone's life.
WITH that said, you were one smart cookie to toss yours into the trash. I hope they catch those rotten robbers soon.
Hugs

Oh wow, I'm so glad you are okay. I would have been the same way about the money..
I was robbed in downtown LA a few years ago broad daylight, but he threw me to the ground and took my tip money, everyone asking me if I was okay, I'm like crying, HE TOOK MY TIPS, MY TIPS... The cops said they had a bad thing with the crack addicts downtown doing it. It's scary I can understand you having a beer, that adrenaline is insane.
Thanks for sharing your story girl, and good on your for throwing it in the trash.

Wow Amy, I'm so glad you and everyone you work with is safe. Your post, to me, truly is a recovery story. How easy and understandable it would be to feel that you were a victim...that this was done "to you" and to see the negative. But instead, your shining recovery sees the angels and the things to be grateful for. Thanks so much for sharing htis...you are an inspiration! Hugs
