Post You Can Help By

I'm not sure if you've heard of it or not, or how you feel about it.
But I saw this letter and whether or not you watch the show or
"How you feel about the show", I believe if you push Dr. Drew
to do this, it will reach many addicts out there, and Friends
and Family of Addicts and give them information that they do not
know exists.

Just a thought, if you don't want to, you don't have to, no need
too. 8

Take Action to Demonstrate the Reality of Recovery from Addiction

Take Action to Demonstrate the Reality of Recovery from Addiction
Join us and our allies in asking VH1 to take three simple steps to put a little reality into its "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" series.
Faces & Voices has written to Mr. Tom Calderone, the President of VH1, asking that the network take steps to inform viewers about the reality of long-term recovery from addiction, as well as where they or their loved ones can get the help they need if they are still struggling with addiction.
In our letter we expressed our deep and growing concern with the show, which sensationalizes the lives of people struggling with addiction, "We believe that when people see this show, they'll wonder why they should help people with addiction and why people struggling with addiction should get insurance coverage for their care."
For a reality show, it's pretty unreal. The unfortunate fact is that when people are able to get the help they need today, it's not in the fantastic facilities where Dr. Pinsky practices. Most people who get help receive it at publicly-financed treatment facilities. That's because private health insurance companies discriminate against people with addiction by denying them coverage or charging higher co-pays and deductibles.
The show follows the lives of eight celebrities. For more information and to view the show, click here.
In our letter, we ask VH1 to take the following steps to put a little reality into “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew”:

1. Open and close the show with Dr. Pinsky making an affirmative statement about the many effective treatments available to people still struggling with addiction and the reality of long-term recovery from addiction.
2. Provide information on the VH1 web site about the many ways that people can get help to recover from addiction, including mutual support groups, medication-assisted treatment, professional clinical treatment, and faith, including links to the Federal government’s Treatment locator.
3. Add a crawl during the show promoting the link to your Web site for more information on where people can seek help.

What You Can Do:

1. Send an email to VH1 President Tom Calderone and VH1 Executives Robin Hopkins and Brett Henne.
2. Tell VH1 viewers and others what recovery means to you and your family by commenting on their web site

Thanks for speaking out against using people still struggling with their addiction for commercial gain. Please contact us with any questions or for further information. We’ll keep you posted in our efforts to bring about changes in the way that “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” is being produced and distributed.

Here is the information if you'd like more.

But I know how most of you are, and you don't like
watching this stuff.
So don't.
Those of you who do, this first part is their intake,
it's very realistic, as far as them being messed up.
Just to warn you, it's sad... Very sad for some.
Jeff Conway freaked even me out. Hard to watch.
But you can pick and choose who you want, if you decide.
Other wise you can just look at the site if you want.
Or just sent an email if you want.

I regularly watch A&Es Intervention because it really helps me to see the reality of addiction, not just what the addict allows you to see. In my opinion, it doesn't glamorize drugs at all... just the opposite, I think. But I can understand why a lot of people can't watch it.

I wasn't planning to watch Celebrity Detox because it looked like it was going to play up the whole voyeuristic, "Britney Hilton-celebrity-out-of-control" kind of hype. I did watch the show tonight, but I haven't made up my mind on whether I'll watch it again. I do want to learn all I can, and I think if they didn't do it as a "reality show", it would be more informative. On the other hand, reality shows are very popular and maybe in this format it will reach people that wouldn't ordinarily sit through a documentary.

I found a number of things in the show very disturbing, especially regarding Jeff Conaway. This guy is obviously in serious trouble, and they seemed to make him out to be a clown. The way it was edited, someone would be talking, then they would cut back to Jeff's incoherent mumblings, for comic relief, I suppose. And it wasn't just the ditzy girls that laughed at his slurred speech, but even the nurse/administrator or whatever she is was kind of smirking when he was slumped in the chair drooling. I don't know much about detox, but shouldn't someone in that condition be detoxed in a hospital? Then again, leaving him alone in his room and then calling for an ambulance makes for better TV, I guess. I do like Dr. Drew. Some of my earliest lessons about addiction I learned from him. It kind of surprises me that he would do a show like this.

So, while I agree with this group that this show needs to reassess the "reality" of addiction, I may be looking at it from a slightly different perspective. I understand their concern that most recovering addicts don't go to Hollywood rehabs and that the reality of that should be represented. My concern is more that the stories that they do show are just typical, sensationalized TV". Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions here, but I'll bet you $5 that there's going to be a catfight between the porn star and the female wrestler... not exactly something that's going to help me understand addiction. On the other hand, I may be completely off-base here. I've never been to rehab, so maybe that's exactly what it's like. I don't know.. sorry for rambling on for so long.

After all my blabbering, I forgot to mention that they did have a message from Drew Pinski at the end of the show that was along the lines of ... "if someone you know has a problem with drugs or alcohol, they need your help... contact drugfree.org". Maybe the actions by this group made a difference.

Dr Drew & some of these celebs were on the Tyra Talk Show last week - they asked Dr. Drew what should you do if you think your loved one has a problem with drugs or alcohol, he gave a really good answer about seeking professional help for interventions, try to offer healthy support thru rehab, but most of all take good care of yourself and seek help for yourself and other family members thru programs like Al-Anon and Nar-Anon.

Most "addiction/alcoholism" programs don't provide that type of reference for help for the family. Sure wish "Intervention" would do a story on how Al-Anon or Nar-Anon helped save a life.
