Tell him to settle down and have another beer, call 911 and see if they can help him.

the thing is he was drinking in public and he is 17 years old so calling them is not an option, i told him he needs to get sober and that would take time so hes slowly getting there

Being 17, this is just the tip of the iceberg, the sooner he has to face consequences the better. Shielding him is not an option, he needs to take responsiblity for his behavior.

numb6, you may like the answer but truly the best thing you can do is call 911 and let the police and hospital personnel deal with him. Especially if he is suicidal, what he needs most is professional help. Rescuing him from his choices is not doing him any favors.
