Son of an alchololic
My dad is an alcoholic, and I really have no idea how to help him. Here's a little info: He says he doesnt get drunk after hes been drinking. He also does not want to change, and denies that he has a problem. He made a promise to stop, but then broke it, and thinks nothing of breaking it. He also thinks that I and my mother need to change, not him. I really have no idea what to do. Any advice?
It sounds like both you and your mother are in a difficult position. Unfortunately, until an alcoholic is willing to get help, there is not much that anyone can do. But there is something that you and your mother can do to help yourselves get through this tough time. There are several groups that help families of alcoholics. These are people who have been or are where you are at right now. They are groups such as ALANON or ALATEEN. There is also a place in this forum for friends and families of alcoholics, that is a great support and information place. I wish I could offer you more. I do hope you will be able to find some help. Take care.
Here is the A.A. aproach to the problem. It's addressed to the Wives but you can read it too. It's a little long winded but you can come back to it.
You're in a tough spot. Dad's an alcoholic. He still loves you and wants to do his best for you. Even though it may seem like it sometimes, he doesn't love his Alcohol more than you or your mom. Alcohol gets a grip on people and it won't let go.
Read this, I hope you get something out of it. As stated, Alanon, Alateen help more than anything.
