Question Help please - Intervention?

Hi, I'm nicole, addict - clean and sober - came back about 5 months ago, previously in the program for 1 1/2 years.

My mom just called me asking if i know anything about interventions - less the show i can't say much. She received a call from a friend where my step father lives asking if she knew about interventions for fear that my step dad is apparently drinking himself to death with his new partner (my mom and he are seperated for a few years). And worse yet, his partner has a 10 year old at home.

He is situated in Victoria BC and guaranteed he wouldn't opt for help.
I have been taught that I am powerless over people places and things, including others choices. He and my mom have a daughter (15), who lives with my mom on the lower mainland, and she has been affected by many behaviours he has acted out with and their relationship is virtually nonexistent.

I suggested that she go speak to an addictions specialist of some sort and that i would check into some resources. Also, I suggested Al or Nar-Anon, Al-A-Teen, etc for their own support.

So anyway, they are a few people close to him that want to do an intervention - any suggestions on where to start and some resources up here?

thanks for any help

Hi there Nicole, and welcome to SoberRecovery

The best place to find resources is meetings of al-anon or nar-anon. You were absolutely right to direct them to those groups. People at the meetings will have first hand experience with the various hospitals, doctors and detox centers in their particular part of the country. Otherwise you are just gambling by looking up names in the phone book.

Could your Mom go to a meeting with _you_? The first meeting is always very frightening, and if you were willing to go with her to her first one it might make it easier for her.

Whadya think?

Mike

Hi; there is a good website (and book of the same name): http://www.lovefirst.net

Wonderful people; you can give them a call (not sure if they travel to Canada but they are from Micigan,so possibly. If not, I am sure they can help point you to someone who does)

Good luck to you and your Mom, stepdad.

Your suggestions were good, imho. Also reading "Under the Influence" and "Getting Them Sober" (http://www.GettingThemSober.com) and this website are other good starting points.

p.s. Nice to "meet" you and glad you found your way here. Congrats on your own recovery!
