The Movie "The Money Pit"
This movie was on TV again - if you don't remember it by name - it's got Shelley Long and Tom Hanks in it ... they are an unmarried couple who buy a run-down mansion intending to fix it up and sell it for a profit.
I had always remembered that Shelley Long's character drinks throughout the movie and Tom Hanks pretty much tolerates it until they start getting angry at each other. At one point she's talking about a lawyer passing the bar and an angry Hanks retorts, "You never passed a bar in your life!"
One storyline is that she may have cheated on Hanks by sleeping with her ex, but she was blacked out and she doesn't remember. Hanks is desperate to marry her - desperate for her love. What a codie.
Of course I see this all differently now. What an odd, barely explored "alcoholic and her enabler" theme. Some writer had lived through what we're living through. He;s got it pretty well down.

It's interesting how alcoholism is treated in films sometimes.
My XABF used to love the film "Leaving Las Vegas". I didn't care for it at the time, but now I really detest it outright. Ever seen it? About the alcoholic who goes to Las Vegas to drink himself to death? My X thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I think it's a depressing, whiny, self-congratulating piece of goat poop.
My alcoholic sister loved "When A Man Loves a Woman." Especially the enabling parts. That was "true love" to her.
I guess I'm going to have to go back and watch The Money Pit! None of the alcoholism/codie references lodged in my brain the first time around....

Movies, TV and books are never the same in recovery.
When I watch COPS now, I feel sorry for the drunks. And I Thank God it's not me !
I see program everywhere I look, it's mind blowing. Read Stephen Kings "The Black Tower" series for example, he even uses the word 'right sized" !

I think "Leaving Las Vegas" is an accelerated version of what all of our A's are doing to themselves -- slowly killing themselves by drinking. *SIGH* I don't like to watch it either.
Or how about "When a Man Loves a Woman." That one is sad, and makes me cry everytime I see it. It's with Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia.

Amazing how we view movies and people when we have entered recovery! It is a grand feeling to finally be aware of what is going on!
Glass my brother actually went to AA with Stephen King. Very bizzare wild man! Great book series too! I have read some.

I can watch the movie and enjoy it on many levels. You see, my house is 100 yrs old, and I'm in the middle of a few "projects" that have become bigger and more complicated as we go along.
AND the relationship between Tom Hanks and Shelley Long's characters is one to review again.
Thanks for making me smile. It's always been one of my favorite movies.

I feel the same way about the song "Hate Me" by Blue October. Granted, it's not a movie, but it evokes the same feelings for me. It literally makes the hair on my neck stand on end when it comes on the radio.
That song is the epitomy of an addicts self wallowing and complete disregard for those who love them.

When a man loves a woman is not one of my favorites because it strikes to close to home for me. Parts of that movie remind me of my AW so much it is eerie.

I guess I can hijack this thread since I started it - those lyrics and the "waaaaaa" reaction reminds me of something my son said to me while we were listening to my Nirvana tunes in the car:
