One half of birthday cake!! Help!

Hi,

I feel so cranky today...I have heard it said that it is ok to have chocolate and candy when we feel tempted to drink...

Problem for me is, it ends up being much more...I ate half of my sons' birthday cake! It was a huge cake!!! I have also bought bags of choc. candy bars, and boxes of fancy cookies only to be making midnight trips to raid the fridge...I have put on seven pounds...

It is terrible to say, but I am far harder on myself about gaining a few pounds than drinking...BUT I know that a few pounds doesn't constitute drinking...

I have got to get control of this...Anyone one else have this problem?

I think it's often easy to switch from one addiction to another. And, I guess that's why we have to do all the hard work in recovery. I had lost some weight while drinking, which wasn't healthy and I quickly gained it back when I stopped drinking. I also got back to exercising, mostly walking/hiking which I really like.

Don't be hard on yourself as you're finding your way along this road. Your body is adjusting and so is your mind, so be kind to yourself.

Hi Missy,

Your post made me chuckle - because I'm guilty of eating half a cake too!

If we were to eat like this every night, I'd say it was a problem.

Like you, if I keep any of the fancy cookies or sweets in the house, I wake up in the middle of the night and walk like a robot to where I have hidden it. I try to keep 'light' versions of these snacks around i.e. Oreo thins so that it satisfies my sweet tooth but doesn't have me reeling with remorse.

IO Storm has a funny saying, something about knowing you're in recovery when you can't zip your jeans - and I can't zip mine anymore!!

I'm glad you posted, M.

xoxo Lynn

I followed an eating plan for 6 months with great results.
it's outlined in the book "Under The Influence"
Sorry...it's not here in the excerpts we do have.

The cravings will lessen in both frequency and intensity
the longer you are sober.

Blessings

I am hard on myself for eating too much too. I think a lot of it is the pressure put on us to maintain the perfect weight. It's awful, but I was thinking about some of my "former" friends when I was still using heavily and they never once told me I should stop drinking (why would they - then the party would end) but they always gave me crap anytime I put on a few extra pounds!!!

You're not alone I ate an entire LARGE pizza by myself the other night! I have tried to make up for it this weekend by eating a lot of salads and healthier foods, hee hee.

in early recovery everyday you dont drink is a massive sucess (actually not just early recovery but at any stage of recovery). eating alot in the first year of sobriety is normal. i gained 40 pounds in the first 15 months of sobriety. i have since lost 20 pounds and gotten exactly where i needed to be (i came in way underweight). when you go away to college people gain "the freshman 15"...in sobriety the first year is like the "freshman 30" lol....

as long as you dont drink, the day has been an overwhelming victory! dont beat yourself up...celebrate your achievement of not drinking today!!!!

Missy...

Yep..I recall an NA meeting I sat in..and most of the gals with a little clean

time had gained from a little to a lot of weight..

That is where I heard the saying.."You know you're in recovery when you can't

zip yer jeans!"

I said to the men...."It's not fair..how do the guys stay skinny!"

lol

I have gained 30 lbs....but much of it is due to a biploar med that is

infamous for night time cravings for sugar..you may have a blood sugar

imbalance..as I do..severe hypoglycemia...talk to your doctor.

It can actually mimic craving alcohol...and a buttload of sweets can become

a trigger..a sugar hangover that turns to a minute level of alcohol in the

stomach..

I read this..don't take it as medical advice..but it sure makes sense.

My best to you and congrats on your sober time Missy.

Love,

:
