Unhappy 78 Days sober and I still feel ill.

Hi, I am 29 years old and from the age of 16/17 until the 26th April this year I had basically been drinking alcohol like there was no tomorrow and in the later years I drank from the moment I woke up until I passed out. As you can imagine this has had a pretty serious effect on my health. what is beginning to worry me though is that I haven't had a drink for 78 days now and my physical health does not seem to be improving that much for a 29 year old. I would appreciate it if anyone can tell me how long it took them to get well after they stopped. I know 78 days isn't a long time but to a serious alcoholic it feels like it.

hi anon, and welcome.
this is a great place with lots of intelligent people
with experience similar to yours.

first, you are being healthy by not putting more poison in your body.
answering your specific question " can anyone tell me how long it took them to get well after they stopped."

Really, to feel good physically, you'll need to exercise and eat correctly.
But, you've done the most important thing, and that is to stop ingesting poison.
That is far and away the healthiest thing you can do.

Now, you'll need to start planning your next steps to feeling good.
You'll want to take a walk each day, or do some sort of exercise.
And you'll want to focus on your nutrition.
There are lots of people who don't feel good physically who don't drink.
It has to do with other habits.

But please, don't let any of that bother you.
Please concentrate solely on not drinking anymore.
That is your #1 goal. you will feel better, much better, over time.

Your local library has books on nutrition and exercise.
So does Amazon.com

And 78 days is a long time!!!
Congratulations on a difficult achievement.

Welcome to SR Anon. You have found a great place!!!!

As to still feeling ill. Yes absolutely go to your doctor or a doctor and get checked out and please BE HONEST with the Dr.

Also, you are expecting your body to heal from 12 years of alcohol abuse in 78 days.......my dear that just isn't going to happen. It takes quite a while to regain our health after the damage we have done while imbibing our beverage of choice.

Again WELCOME to SR.

Please keep posting and let us know how you are doing, we do care!!

love and hugs,

Welcome !

I have almost 9 months. I drank like you did. I still feel......OK. Don't get me wrong, I feel a LOT better than I did. But no where near 100%. I don't know your story, but I was pretty darn close to dead during the de-tox(es). The last couple of years were 24 x 7 where I'd withdraw without alcohol in my system.

It takes a while. Good ol' alcoholic thinking though. "Hey, it's been (x amount of time), shouldn't everything be normal ?"

Smile Welcome

Congratulations on your 78 days of sobriety. I agree with Carol, Laurie and Anna; you should see a doctor to make sure there are no underlying problems. Keep reading and posting. We're glad to have you here with us. GH

Hi Anon,
Inspiring acheivement! Congratulations. There is a great book that can help with your recovery. It's called Seven Weeks to Sobriety. Your local library likely has it. There's an explanation of what is going on with you chemically and a handy chart of tests reccomended to have done. Most importantly (in my opinion) is suggested diet, amino acids and later vitamins and minerals that will help your brain and body recover. You can get started eating in a way that will help you until you can get to your Dr.

BTW my MD has not been much help so I am looking around for a new one. Sometimes MD's don't have much experience with other modalities of health care. Even nutrition..

Take good care!
