How do I Support a Loved One?

Hi, my boyfriend is 6 months sober and it seems everything has come crashing down, he feels empty and he said he needs some space and a break to clear his head and deal with the guilt and the past on his own without my help. We have been together 9 months total, it's been about a week and a half and not sure if i'm doing the correct thing. We have had no contact. I'm just wondering if this is a typical occurrance that he's going through and how long before I should contact him. He's going to meetings, talking to a sponsor and belongs to a group. I just feel helpless and wondering if i'm doing the correct thing by staying away. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

You'd have to ask the peeps over at Friends and Family of Alcoholics.

But my gut says yeah, just wait it out.

Hi Hbb,

Welcome!

I did feel a lot of guilt when I stopped drinking, but I didn't want to get away. But, everyone is different.

As GlassPrisoner has suggested, you might check out the Friends and Families forums on our board, where you'll find lots of support.

I'd like to find that forum, too. Can anyone guide us?

Thanks!

Hope you've found that forum by now and some of the answers you're seeking. My own personal suggestion would be Al-Anon for you while he's pursuing his own recovery in AA. Even though you may not be a drinker/alcoholic, everyone is affected by the behavior of the active alcoholic near and dear to us.
