Question Alcohol consumption and nutrition

Hi again

Just a quick and simple question this time. When a person consumes, say, 6-8 beers and then eats a big salad for dinner, is their body able to absorb the vitamins and minerals from the salad or does alcohol interfere with this and if so, to what extent?. Do ANY vitamins and mineral get absorbed?.

- Thanks, N4C

Alcohol interferes with the absorbtion of nutrients, especially the B vitamins. Read chapter 9 of "Under the Influence" titled malnutrition.

Ditto what GlassPrisoner said. I always took a b vitamin complex when I was drinking. Alcoholics are literally starving for b vitamins.

I felt so darn virtuous when I
splashed V-8 into my huge glass of vodka!

IMO you might as well eat junk food
cause alcohol keeps you unhealthy anyway.

OMG....

We suffer extreme malnutrition after poisoning our bodies..

I take mega complex vitamins daily to continue to rebuild...

But..why take an aspirin to alleviate the pain of a broken

limb while furiously smashing away at another one?

My best to your recovery..Need..

Please don't get cirrhosis like I did...

Love,

IO

BYW...

I was miracuously healed of that...

But sadly this is usually not the case..

Just the Grace of God..

And I stopped in time.

Carol, that's hilarious!

Alcohol is particularly good at removing the B vitamins from your body and among other things, increases bone loss in women.

Question Red wine

Is it true that red wine helps the body to make new blood cells? I heard this many years ago.

I'm pretty sure your body was saying 'Salad? What salad?'

I take vitamin supplements now too. :-)

When I had a bad bleeding ulcer back in about '78 a friends mom told me about putting scotch in milk so she could still drink.

I tried it, it worked great. Sure did take that ulcer a long time to heal, lol.

Love and hugs,

LOL... sounds like me when I used to mix lemon juice and sugar with gin to make it "healthy". Alcoholics will find any excuse to justify why it's "ok" to drink. Alcohol is powerful stuff. So is the mind. Together they make a formidable team.

I think without a doubt, alcoholism itself is a major disturbance in nutrition. It is not only achemical addiction, but a malnurishment.

How many of us skipped meals to drink more, especially when the finances got tight? It only became a matter of time before getting hungry meant wanting rum, and food became passe--what i would eat in front of people so they would not get suspicious I was living on alcohol.

It stops the absorption of vitamins, of course--as well as other things. It overwhelms your liver so it can not process nutrients, and in the end becomes your only nutriant.

I am convinced one of the reasons it is often hard to remain quit is that people remove a major nutrient from their diet, and must eat a healthy diet and keep their stomach regularily full, to help control cravings. better nutrition certainly goes a long way with that.

I followed the advice on eating and vitamins from
"Under The Influence" in early recovery.

GP already suggested it...

Many alcoholics follow an eating plan for
hypoglycemia + adding
B complex and a daily multi

But....as long as you are drinking

Need4change,

I used to purposely skip lunch at work just to come home and drink on an empty stomach. I wanted that max 'HIGH'. Every time I did that, I got a ravaging appetite after about 4 beers. I would still hold out on food until I reached my 'HIGH', then ate like a pig. Sometimes to the point of just doing the bulimick (spell check) thing to ease the pressure from my stomach. Feeling better, I then drank more beer just to pursue an even 'HIGHER-HIGH'.

It stands to reason that the body becomes malnurished and depleted of essential nutrients from the moment of impact (first drink). Ever hear having a glass of wine before dinner to 'stimulate' the appetite? For me that was an 'ahah' moment.

Oh, yeah, btw,

I really would hate that withdrawal early the next morning. Especially when I had to go to work.
