Doing OK, hope to do better

Hi all,

I don't post often but I do visit and read quite a bit. I've been sober for 4.5 months. Doing and feeling pretty good. I've quit for longer times before. Lately I'm feeling the way I've felt on other tries right before I started drinking again. That is I'm feeling bored without the drink, think I could drink responsibly now (ha, ha), and feeling somewhat worn out not drinking (like running a race with no end). I really don't want to drink. I feel so much better when I'm sober, but, only you guys and gals really understand what I'm talking about. Your thoughts would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

I do understand, Dave.

Hungry
Angry
Lonely
Tired

Restless
Irritable
Discontent

When I'm bored it's time for me to go to an AA meeting or find a friend to share my thoughts with. There are times when I have to force myself to find something to do, or drink time will return. When I'm restless it's time for me to pray and meditate, to connect with my higher power, and to thank him for my continued sobriety. You'll find what works for you.

Hi Dave,

Congratulations on your 41/2 months.

I understand the feelings you're going through and I think it's probably because you are realizing that you are in this for the long haul and it's raising your addict voice to sound off at you. Have you made changes in your life along with not drinking? I wonder if you've taken up a new hobby, started some volunteer work or taken an educational course. The road to sobriety is always offering us something new and interesting, so take a look around you and see what you'd like to do.

Hi Dave.
I know how you feel too.
Some time sober and you feel like it wont hurt to have just one and thats it.
But remember back to the last time and the time before that.
Boredom is what gets me too.
Youll just jump right back intot that endless circle again.
4 and 1/2 months is really good.
Do you really want to start back at square 1 again and go through the detox and the crappy feelings?
I hope you feel better.
Try to find something to keep your mind and body occupied.
I'll be thinking of you.

I'm glad you recognized that your thinking was off, and that you needed to talk to other alcoholics. Well done on your sober time, FS - do whatever you need to in order to hang on to it. Others have made some great suggestions.

Hi,

Thanks for all the responses. Sorry I didn't respond sooner but I usually don't get to check the site for a day or so.

Carol, I like the link you sent. I can relate to some of it. For some reason, I was on edge for the past couple of days, and the alcoholic in me said that alcohol would make it better. It probably would for a while but I would end up in the place I always end up: Drinking too often and too much and drunk or hungover most of the time. I am truely tired of that place.

Again, thanks for all the replys from all of you.

Dave

Yup--I did it also-again-and again-and again.............
I absolutely love the saying "nothing changes if nothing changes"
I totally know how to throw my sobriety down the toilet,
I've done it enough times.
I don't however know how to maintain quality, long term sobriety.
This is my challange---the reward is "contented life". So far, almost 7 months sober-odaat.
Don't drink--it's the better choice no doubt~

Hi Dave...
I had three months of sobriety last year when I decided that I had the ability to moderate. I was very wrong. You have some good time built up, I hope you don't experiment the way I did. This is a great place, please stick around.

Thanks to all for taking the time to respond. It's a few days later and I have to say I have a better frame of mind then I did when I initially posted this thread. I guess every day isn't all roses, regardless if you drink or not. I do feel better though. Thanks.
