Intro, and a question...
Hello, man names not Jack but it will be here. :^)
anyway, I've been "clean" now for around 120 days now. I put clean in parenthesis because I've drank once and smoked once in that time period...so its not contiguous I guess...my slip was around the 90 day mark, haven't again since.
I think like alot of people the doubts on whether or not I really had a problem or had just gotten out of control for a bit got to me. Kinda stupid in retrospect honestly. The better half of ten years isn't really "a bit" but addiction is a tricky thing I suppose. I did get significantly more out of control towards the end though...so maybe it was memories of when it wasn't so out of control...I honestly don't know.
Sooo, my question
I've been doing the AA thing but honestly. I don't really like the feel of AA. I've heard that AA is not the only way to stay sober and honestly...it can't be. So my question I guess is to all the people that don't do the AA thing...what works for you?

AA works for me...a hopeless but now recovering alcoholic...
NA didn't "feel" right to me...but I respect the program..
Maybe NA would feel right to you!
And Welcome to SR Jack!

Welcome. In answer to your question, yes there are options to AA. Depending on where you live, in person meetings may be hard to find. Here is a link to a number of sites that is on the Secular Connections forum: http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...cular-web.html
That forum would be a good place to ask for other's personal experience with these programs. Hope that helps, take care.

Hi Jack and Welcome,
I am not an AA person either. I have been around this website for a few years, and before that, I read, used books. SR is my lifeline now and here is a list of some other recovery programs:

Hiya 'Jack'
I'm an AA person myself but understand that many others recover using other programs, books, religion, etc
That's what's great about this community you've joined - we may have our different journeys, but we share a common purpose - the desire to live fully without drugs or alcohol. I'm glad that you decided to join us and hope that you keep posting.

Hello
I could never stop drinking and stay that way without AA. However, I have friends who have used therapy and the teachings of the Dali Lama. Mind you, he was getting high while telling me about it, but there ya go!(this was before I got sober). I also have a friend who's a Mind/Body healer, and he gets alot out of that..he's been sober for awhile now..
This is a great place to share!!

Hi Jack..Glad you are here.
I have never been to AA or NA. But I am new to recovery.
So no advice there.
But I can say this board is full of support and understanding.
Hope you keep posting.

Hi, Jack=)
Welcome to SR. If you are looking for other forms of support, you've found a great one here. Personally, I use this as a supplement to meetings. Just wondering, have you tried a lot of different groups? Sometimes different groups click with different people. Do you have a sponsor and are you working the steps? Having a sponsor can help you feel more connected. I go to both NA and AA meetings. SOme people say you should choose a specific program and maybe someday I'll choose. Right now, I only have 78 days of sobriety. So, I'm giving it time. People in each group have their reasons for sticking with a particular program. What's most important is that you do what works for you. I hope you find fulfillment regardless of where you choose to go.
AND CONGRATS ON YOUR SOBER TIME! WAY TO GO=)

I had forgotten I ever registered here. I found this intro post so I decided not to put up a new one.
It is a five year old post, and I wish I could say I was sober the whole time. I haven't been. In fact, in a few hours I'll have my first 24 hours sober. So herre I am again. Starting this whole process over, again.
I found my old coins and looking over them I remember that year and a half as probably the best time in my life, despite the heartache and pain involved. I want it back, I want to be that guy again.
