New guy

Hi all,

I'm very new here and to alcoholism recovery. I actually tried to register here whilst on my last binge a couple of weeks ago, but I was unable to manage it-- time after time. Probably around 30 tries, haha. It's just as well; any post would have been less than coherent and not very endearing!

Anyway, I have a lot of questions, though I'm on my way way to a meeting and will pose just one. How does one find a sponsor in AA?? And why is this important? I think I have found a good group but I don't know anyone really. I show up, listen, participate a bit, and bolt.

Gotta run, but will check back soon.

Thanks a lot for any input, and glad to be here!

Daniel

I don't personally work a 12-step program, but many here do and will be along shortly to help you with your question. You will find a lot of helpful information in the AA forum http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...-step-support/
Mostly I just wanted to welcome you to SR, it's a great place for support and advice. Best of luck to you. Take care.

For sponsorship info....look on the free literature rack in most meetings
"Questions & Answers on Sponsorship" is there.

Glad to see you here

Hi Daniel and welcome to SR. You have found an important social network that will help you along the way.

Keep coming back and sharing. Same for AA.

How does one find a sponsor? Well for starters, quit leaving the meeting right afterwards... I found that the meeting after the meeting (i.e. the socializing that goes on after the meeting) was as important as the meeting itself. It was also a time to start friendships, find sponsors, etc.

Daniel,

If you have found a group that you are comfortable in, that is a big piece of the puzzle, IMHO. In DFW, there must be tons of meetings as well.

There is a great group in Grapevine, TX (great town name to start an AA group in) that I have been to a couple of times when I was there on business.

At any rate welcome and let usknow how you are doing.

I was afraid someone would suggest that, though I somehow know you're correct on this...although in my career I deal extensively with the public, and have for 12 yrs, I'm painfully shy, introverted outside of this arena. Nobody who has dealt with with me in business would ever believe it, but it's true. So this is the crux of the matter. I have forced myself to attend meetings which was initially beyond my comfort zone (and have adjusted to it moderately) so surely I can convince myself to hang 'round for small talk. I'll give it a go next meeting.

Thanks for your thoughts.
Daniel

I actually intend to check out a Grapevine meeting when I feel like a longish drive(30-40 minutes) And yes, we do have tons of groups in DFW. I'm told we have some very good ones and to seek those out. Also, a few really lousy groups to avoid like the plague. I've been to five different groups so far.

Thank you much for the welcome. This seems like a warm/fuzzy place

Grapevine is one of the many small cities within the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Think DFW Airport area.

HAHA I thought you meant that Grapevine was the name of an alcoholics organization and I thought to myself, "I've never heard of that before, sounds more like a reference to wine".

Grapevine, TX is a suburb of Dallas, near the DFW airport. I just thought "Grapevine" was an ironic name as "Grapevine" is also the name of the monthly "newletter in print" that AA puts out.

If you subscribe to the Grapevine it comes in a plain brown wrapper (to protect your anonymity from the postman I presume).

I live with my sister (who knows I am in AA) and one day I sensed she was curious about this brown package I get once a month and I showed it to her. I think she thought I was getting porn in the mail! LOL.

I explained that no one gets porn in the mail anymore, that's what the internet is for!

In all seriousness if you have not read the Grapevine it is great, here is a link to it and you can subscribe to it online:

Daniel,

The Grapevine, TX meeting I had in mind was right off of Main street, in the "old town". I don't know the exact address but I could drive you right to it. I am sure you'll find it.

At any rate keep in touch and maybe we'll go to a meeting one day together? I am one of those lucky/cursed people that travels a lot on business and I have been to AA meetings in several states.

That was a funny post, and thanks for the link to aagrapevine. I've not heard of it yet.
Come to think of it,the nomenclature is a bit ironic for a alcohol recovery publication. Or should I say Pub for short? Sorry.
