Hi everyone.
This is my first post. I got back from the ER a little while ago, and they recommend a full detox. I didn't know it was such a problem, but in hindsight, it's ruined a large portion of my life.
Today I asked for help.

Thank you for the warm welcome, and for your support. I will be frequenting this board...they recommended that I seek an internet chat board if I'm not comfortable going to meetings. I think that was a good idea.

Welcome Fade!
amazing what weight begins to lift from your shoulders the more you read here, as you begin posting and getting some of the fear and sadness out of your head and into cyberspace.
Look forward to meeting you.

I have several questions...and I'm pretty nervous about the whole thing. I can't do an inpatient detox due to the fact that I have to work, so they recommended an outpatient program where you go to meetings and such. Not sure if I can do that either.
Do I just wake up one day and say to myself, "I'm not drinking tonight", and suffer the consequences, or set aside some time (vacation days) when I can be at home suffering these terrible withdrawals that I'm told I'll be going through? I already feel it, because I've slowed down A LOT in the past week...it doesn't feel good at all. I'm willing to do whatever it takes, I just need a good time frame to make it happen.
Hello Fade! I wish you the best. If you are really determined to stop, then there will probably be some discomfort, to say the least.
As was told to me, I could go through the pain of stopping drinking....yes, there were withdrawals...I felt like I had a horrible flu. But the hard part for me was staying stopped.
This board has been a life saver for me. When I just don't know what to do with myself, I stay here and read and read and read.
Good for you slowing down so much. Keep reading, keep writing. As far as a good time frame, there is no time like the present. The people here will support you, no matter what.

Hi Fade:
Recovering alcoholic here:
Haven't touched Xanax in 15 years, bur took it (prescribed)
for 15 years daily. My detox (controlled with a substitute
medication) was for four months. A graduated decrease
from 4 (I won't name the drug) pills daily to 3, 2, and the
last month 1. I have never picked up since then. Your
symptoms may not require a drastic solution as your use
was rather short term (1 year). Follow whatever your
doctor's instructions are to the "T". Some time off
work may be the best for you...
I hope this helps in some way...keep posting...
And do not give up. The first step is admitting the
problem and seeking help.
You are doing great!
We are all with you on this...
Love,
Sherry

Hi Fade . Good to meet you. If you're not doing inpatient detox please get as much help and info from your doctor as to be safe at home. I haven't had to go through this so my advice is not from experience... just advice. You have found a great internet support group here... I hope you stick around.
Remember too, that simply de-toxing is not going to mean you quit using.
I drank on the way home from my first de-tox, and made it 6-8 weeks after my last one. It wasn't until I found a good recovery program (AA in my case) and fully immersed myself in it that I was able to gain any considerable (relative to me at least) time of sobriety. (6 months this Wednesday)
