TOPIC: Would You Travel Up Or Down The Stream With Or W/out A Paddle? Life's Terms.
Hi Im Sharon and Im an Alcoholic.
By the Grace of my HP and people
like you here in SR I havent had a
drink of alcohol since 8-11-90.
For that and you I am truely
grateful.
I recently recieved this share
from another member of AA
and wanted to share it with
you.
The words this member uses to
describe living on lifes terms is
exactly how i would interprete
it.
If ud like maybe you can share
ur own way you see living life
on lifes terms in ur own words.
As I saw it, life gave me a choice:
I could either get in a canoe with
no paddle and head downstream,
not knowing where I was heading,
or I could get in a canoe with a
paddle and paddle upstream. I
would be in charge. Paddling gave
me a sense of control.
Each day, I paddled and paddled
and paddled against the rush of
the river's current, muscles aching,
body sweating, but each evening
I'd get out of the canoe and note
I was in the very same spot that
I started from in the morning. No
matter, I told myself, I was in control.
No way was I going to get in a canoe
without a paddle and let it to go
downstream willy-nilly and hit rocks
and fallen trees and maybe even
capsize or go over a waterfall.
Finally, I became so worn out from
the paddling upstream and so
dejected that I hated life and
came into AA where the old timers
told me to try something different.
"Like what?" I asked.
"Like get into a canoe without
a paddle," they answered in unison.
"I can't," I said.
"Do it," they said, grinning.
"I could get hurt," I said.
"Possibly," they answered.
Eventually, I gave it a try.
With no paddle,
I headed downstream in
the canoe, frightened, and
cried out to the old timers,
"What's going to happen?"
"Life," they called back, still
smiling.
Wonder of wonders, as a passenger,
I didn't sweat, my muscles didn't
ache, and I wasn't tired. Instead,
I began enjoying the scenery and
waving to people standing along
capsized. So, I got wet, grabbed
the canoe, righted it, and got back
in. No sweat. "Why didn't I do
this before?" I asked the old timers
later.
"Because, like us, you were afraid
to live," they said.
Since that day, I have chosen to
get in a canoe without a paddle and
head downstream. And that's
the way it works for me.
Thanks for letting me share.
