Craving Meds

Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone knew of or was taking any medications to help with cravings. I have a doctor's appt. next week and need something to help with the craving from alcohol. If anyone can help me I'd be very grateful.

Hiya Boo!!!!! Welcome to SR!
Your doctor will go over the meds with you and explain each one. Just tell him you need something.
Hugs, keep coming back!

Hi J boo,

Yes, just talk to your dr about your concerns and see what his recommendations are.

Hi Boo,

It's not usually a good idea to dispense any sort of medical advice here. Hang in there until you can see your doc. The cravings do go away, just not as quickly as we would like, sometimes. I'm glad you're here - welcome to SR.

Unhappy not too good idea

I do not think it is a good idea to use a medicine to stop craving. I just read in another Thread, somebody's husband got addicted to the medicine prescribed by Dr. to help him with alcohol problem and he ended up in MMT (methadone maintanance treatment).

I take Campral. It is supposedly the only drug that is designed to assist with cravings. There are other medications that are designed to reduce the effects and cause sickness from alcohol. So far I have been sober for 3 weeks today. I haven't noticed the reduced cravings aside from breaking the habit. After my first week the cravings really subsided because I was getting used to not being drunk at 5:30. It was really like an internal alarm clock. I still fight every late afternoon, but it has gotten much easier.

One note, Campral does require you to be under the supervision of a psychiatrist. I'm not sure how that requirement is substantiated, but I went with it anyway.

With insurance it is relatively inexpensive with the only downside being that you have to take two pills three times a day. If you're a busy person, it's easy to miss, though I haven't seen any increase in cravings after missing doses.

I know that there might be horror stories of people becoming addicted to medication, but this is certainly not one of them. It does not cause any type of stimulus. I don't know what there could ever be addicting about this particular medication. It could be a sugar pill for all I know, but it helps me to know that I'm actively doing something to quit. It's abstract, but it's good to know that I can be proactive instead of just reactive to the cravings.
