Exclamation Shot to Block the Affects of Opiates?

I need some help and the family and friends of substance abusers forum in out of commision so I hope you all don't mind my posting from here.

My cah got out of rehab and went right back to the crack house under this excuse he was just going to go in for a few Vicadin and someone came in with some rock while he was waiting and the rest is history.

Anyway, he went right back to rehab and said that they gave him a shot so that even if he took Vicadin or other opiates they would have no affect on him? Has anyone ever heard of this?

Hmmmmmm... well if they would have no effect on him, then why take them at all?

I am familiar with a shot they give to alcoholics (maybe addicts, too) called Vivitrol(sp). It is supposed to block the cravings in the brain. But that certainly does not mean an alcoholic can keep drinking.

I think maybe your CAH has misunderstood... or he is hoping YOU will.

Wow! Thanks for the information. I looked it up and it is used for both alcohol and drug addiction. Do you know of anyone who has used it and was it successful?

You are most likely right that he hopes I will believe this is a fix all, but I have been down this road before and he knows that I am serious this time as I have a restraining order against him.

Even if the marriage is over, I would love to see him succeed but he has to want it too.

I saw something on COPS once where an ambulance paramedic gave a shot to a guy having a seizure. Then he asked him if he'd been doing heroin. They guy denied it. Then the paramedic said, "Well that's funny cause this medicine only works on people who have overdosed on heroin and it worked on you."

Just so you know someone out here had heard of something like that before.

My recovering AH is taking the shot. They gave it to him just before he was released from rehab. It's a once a month thing. His regular doctor was not familiar with it, however. But the treatment facility found a doctor for us that IS familiar with it and who will continue to give the shot to my AH every month.

I can't tell you if it works. My AH probably can't tell you, either. He has told me that he has had only 1 brief craving since leaving rehab. But my AH is working the full program... outpatient treatment and AA meetings everyday. So we don't really know if the lack of cravings is due to the shot or his commitment to the program. Perhaps it is a combination of both.

I don't mind him taking the shot. I say do whatever it takes. I'd rather he take a shot once a month, than drink a gallon of vodka every day.

So far... we are truly blessed.

Never heard of it---there are medications to help with craving--and there are non narcotic meds to give him---sounds like they may have given him a shot of Ativan which would be right if he is in rehab--Crack withdrawl is awful--he most likely has no idea what he is even talking about right now,,,talk to someone in the rehab--they usually have family meetings---get the names of his medication....
