New member here...

Hi, I'm new here, I found this site last night and decided today to join after seeing the immense amount of support and info here. I made the decision yesterday to quit drinking. I've known for a couple of months that I am an alcoholic, but have tried to deny it to myself in order to NOT face it and deal with it. It's just easier to tell myself I'll worry about it another day, right now the beer or the vodka or the tequila or whatever alcohol I have in the house is calling my name. I've steadily drunk more and more over the past 12 months. I finally got to the point where I'd open the fridge to get a bottle of water, and instead would pull out a beer. Whether it was 7am or 7pm. Now, today, only 24 hours sober I'm dealing with the pounding headache and trying to find something to do OTHER than drink. Sooo, here I am, reading through all the info and posts here and hoping this headache will pass soon. Let me just thank you all for all the wonderful support I've already seen here!

Hi GraySkies,

Welcome!

You are right that SR is a great place for support and information. You've made a good decision and each day will get a little easier. I hope you keep posting and reading.

Welcome... you can do it

Welcome GraySkies... you found this place much like I did, and you're right - there is a lot of support here. As I'm only a few days ahead of you, I can't really give an great revelation of advice, other than to say each day you will feel physically better. I'm getting through it on pure mental willpower and trying to distract myself with anything I can. (instead of doing one load of laudry per week, I've been doing multiple small loads each day - as an example). Go wash your car... backup your computer... browse in a music or book store... Anything to take up time. (on a related note, the book "Sober for Life" by Ann Fletcher is very good - I can't put it down)

Anyway, welcome to SR and congratulations for taking the big leap towards sobriety - I do believe THAT is the hardest part.

Thank you for the welcome! Sailor, you have great ideas for staying busy. I was just thinking this might be a good time to work on sorting through clothes and rearranging my closet. Even with the headache and some anxiety, I feel so much better already. Awake - really awake - usually at this time of day I'm in a 'fog'.

I made it through the day sober. I even took one of our dogs and did a 2 mile walk with her, my youngest son and my husband. It felt great too! Now that supper is over, I'm a little anxious since I ALWAYS have a few drinks before bed. Last night was easier because we had to be out late and I wasn't around alcohol at all. Tonight I'm a bit nervous, but I will do this!

Congrats on day one! Walking has always been a favorite of mine, too. Even a quick 10 - 15 min stroll seems to disrupt the habit of pouring. Plus the added health improvement. I've hated not taking walks w/my family because I was too busy drinking...

Thank you everyone! This headache - ARGH! I think the anxiety, tossing and turning and weird dreams all night, and the constant reminding myself I WON'T drink is all easier to deal with than the headache. Tylenol is my new best friend, along with water, Crystal Lite, and decaf coffee. Anything to keep the fluids going in. I'll be sober 48 hours this afternoon. It feels like forever already!
