Nicknames
Nicknames
Just something I've noticed, when people sign up here they often use names related to alcohol.
For me, because I was trying to change my behaviour away from alcohol, I chose a name that had nothing to do with alcohol. I am just wondering why people choose alcohol related names?
Secondly, I am wondering if having an alcohol related nickname may actually be a negative thing as you go through recovery?
Any thoughts?
Peace, Levi

I understand what you mean, Levi; and, it beats the heck out of me. Maybe it's because they're so new they still identify more with the drinking than with sobriety.
The thing that has always bothered me is when someone refers to themselves as "a drunk" when they have been able to stay sober for a while. I certainly was a drunk; but, I'm not anymore, and don't want to still be thought of as one.
You'll notice my user name reflects my pride in being a Jerseyite. On another board, I use jerseynonny, because I like being identified as a nonny (grandmother) from New Jersey.
I guess there are those who would say, "What's in a name?" Personally, I think quite a bit.

OOOPS! My user name here is "raerob", because I tried other combinations and they were already taken. Rae is my first name, Ro is for my middle name (Rosalee), and B is the initial of my last name.
That should do it.
That should do it.
Is the glass half empty or half full.
Dear Sharon, I'm Sharon too! Regarding your name and how new people percieve things when newly recovering.
To qoute you..... "aasharon90... nothing negative here
about my name.
I dont ever want to forget who i am
or where i came from."
The first time I came here and seen your name I was feeling pretty
negative and down. So when I saw your name, I interpreted to mean
ass sharon, even though it was aasharon. Its sad how the mind works
sometimes when we are in a funk.
Please take no offence. You have been an incredible inspiration to me, thank-you!

I've used GlassPrisoner on various boards, and used it here also. It's based on a song by a progressive/metal band called Dream Theater titled "The Glass Prison". This song is actually part 1 of a unfinished work about their drummers recovery from alcoholism.

lol~~~hope3!!!
Levi,
Veddy interesting thread!
My name has nothing to do with alcohol. Largely because I was either in total denial about being alcoholic initially, or, because I saw this forum more as a place to commuincate than anything else. Boy, did I underestimate SR!!
This forum offers so much more than anonymous online communication.
And, Miss Communicat, was also a joke...a play on words. It reflects my professional writer persona.

Thought provoking thread Levi...
On other boards I'm segram99. My first two initials and a variation of my last name. I thought coming here, segram is to close to the name of a liquor, so I changed it. Too each their own, I guess. Everbody's different in their thinking, and nothing wrong with that...
One day at a time.

Umm, my brain was too bogged down when I first found SR to put in a whole lot of thought. So I went with the logical choice for me...Juliee because Julie was already taken! It's all I could muster at the time.
I've just noticed the various names, some have nothing to do with booze, others have everything to do with booze. I appreciate everyone's feedback.
For me, Leviathon is actually leviathan misspelled on purpose. The leviathan is a giant sea creature that is pursued by this relentless hero in the bible. My struggles to be me have often been huge and I have frequently been pursuing relentlessly my dreams so it seemed to fit.
Peace, Levi

my name is pretty self explanatory. i take great pride in being from Chicago. to me its the greatest city. Incredible skyline. 10,000,000 people in the chicagoloand area but the perfect medium between being too condensed and too spread out. beautiful neighborhoods. Rich in culture. Birthplace of House music. and of course Deep Dish PIZZA!!
oh yeah and 4000 meetings a week.

This was interesting, I'm not all that creative, so I kept it simple with name and birth year.
Levi, I always wondered, just had not gotten 'round to asking you yet.
GP-Thanks for the song, heavy stuff, thats for sure!
Sharon, I'm quite sure you can, cause I know someone who did, but I dont know how much of your old identity you keep.
Take care, all!
