Question TOPIC: How Do You Beat Fatigue In Recovery?

Hi Im Sharon and Im an alcoholic.

By the Grace of my HP and people
like you here in SR I havent found it
necessary to take a drink of alcohol
since 8-1-90. For that Im truely grateful.

Its not just not drinking or using in
recovery that we have to worry about.
We also learn to take care of ourselves
mentally, physically, emotionally, and
spiritually.

Here are 5 ways to beat fatigue in
recovery......

1. START YOUR DAY RIGHT
Eat a low fat, high fiber
breakfast such as whole
grain cereal with fresh fruit
for longer lasting energy.

2. STEER CLEAR OF NEGATIVITY
Intensive, pessimistic people
who complain and blame will
leave you feeling drained.

3. TAKE DEEP BREATHS
People who breath quickly
and shallowly feel fatiqued
because their bodies get
less oxygen.

4. SNEAK A CATNAP
A 20 minute snooze can restore
your energy, but a longer one
may leave you feeling drowsy
and disrupt your sleep at night.

5. DRINK UP
Make sure you down at least 8 oz
glasses of water daily to keep your
body hydrated and energized.

6. WRAP YOURSELF IN RED
Studies show that wearing red or
being surrounded by hues can
rejuvinate you.

What is it that you do to take
care of urself in recovery to beat
fatique? Maybe stress?

Thanks for letting me share.

Great topic, Sharon. I confess... I am a napper! Ooooh, I love my afternoon naps on my days off. It's heaven.

I was told in early recovery to watch out for HALT - hungry, angry, lonely and tired. Boy were they right! I have to be viligent every day on this or I slip into irritable and discontent - lol!

Thanks Phinney....your absolutely right in keeping vigilent or for ever watching signs or flags that raise to alert us that we r in danger of slippping back into old behavior. We are only human, but when we get good facts to help us or guide us thru recovery then thats progress of us....

Enjoy ur day Phinney. And a cup of coffee right now sounds excellent....im waiting on my to cool before taking that fist sip.... mmmmm c-o-f-f-e-e.

*yawn*

I don't know if I've ever been as tired as I have been this week. Pulling the extra shifts for my co - worker has just .. wiped me out.

I even had a PTSD event last night - put in a note to my manager that I can't do this long haul extra hours stuff right now, not where I am.

I missed a meeting tonight because I just needed to REST.
So I did. Put on Joe and Charley big book study tapes and snoozed.

Sharon - I copied your list. Gonna give it to the girls at the club.
Thanks!

Thats great Barb.....and what u did to take care of urself was right on target....u listened to ur body and mind and did the next best thing.....if we dont take care of "US" first then we r no good to anyone else around us...family, workers....friends.....and then who will take care of us? hmmm

And when u couldnt make a meeting...u did the next best thing to keep ur program fresh in ur mind.....listening to good recovery tapes by Great Men in Recovery... AWESOME..!

I went to one Joe and Charlie BB studdy way back in early recovery.....i remember at that point in my life..i was willing to go to any lengths to stay sober....and hearing great stuff about these 2 guys...and to hear them in person...i couldnt resist.....

Good share Barb..!

I know the feeling. It's been especially hectic where I work with the new accounts that we're fulfilling. The work is literally piling up. Not to mention the pressures in maintaining the balance between quality and quantity.

I know that if I were to point the blame at someone for a job not done correctly then I'd have three fingers pointing back at myself. So I pray for forgiveness for God never gives us more than we cannot handle. And I make it through the day.

It's an easy choice: To be a tornado ripping through the lives of others through constant criticism or to lead by example. We cannot get angry for resentments are the root of all spiritual illness. An example I'm working on is creating a manual which shows some tricks and techniques which aren't documented within the official company manuals.

An alcoholic in his cups is an unlovely creature. We can remember how we were and realize we have the choice today to choose between setting a good or bad example. Ultimately, our Recovery depends on that fact.

As for fatigue, it helps to have a support system. Some suggestions are to call your sponsor, write about it and even try prayer and meditation. Or just take a nap or relax with a good book, such as the Big Book.

It works! It really does.

Yours in Recovery, Mark B.

Good share Mark B.....You made some good points....speaking honestly.

Arura....rain.....we r due for rain tonight as another front is due for us......rain is a good way to slow down our fast pace in life.....as the rain replinishes the grass, trees, flowers, birds, animals with natures free rewards....we too reap the free rewards in recovery just by following those simle sayings we often here in recovery.....
KEEP IT SIMPLE...H.A.L.T.....R.I.D....LET GO AND AND LET GOD(OR UR HP AS U UNDERSTAND THEM)....And many more...

Thanks guys for sharing ur ESH here.

Exercise is great and so is meditation.

Sleeping is always difficult for me, so this is always an issue.

I know what I won't be doing Just For Today.

Lately I've been writing in my journal. I've been looking at some past entries written a few years ago. Man, I was quite a different creature back then. I'm much more mellow now.

Such a thing helps me to keep things in perspective One Day At A Time.

Yeah, fatigue can be a problem for me too. Considering what I've put my body through, it's no wonder. Even 90 some days in, I'm still rebuilding and healing.

I take a hr nap daily, that helps. Especially because I suffer from insomnia too,

Fatigue can get the best of us if we don't take care
of ourselves...our needs, our bodies, minds, and souls.

Plenty of rest, proper nutrition, slow down some, don't
stress....physical exercise for the body...walking, fresh
air....and taking our daily medicine in recovery....Meetings,
service work, talking and listening to others....

ENERGIZE to carry on...pass on the message of hope, wisdom,
and knowledge of recovery.

What do u do to ward off fatigue....??

Daylight has been shown to improve mood and wakefulness. I open my curtains and turn on lights as soon as I wake up.

Taking a shower and a cup of coffee helps a lot too. I like to take a walk midday when I start to get tired. Exercise really does wake you up.

just reading around the board...
this should be
eight 8 oz (1/2 gallon) glasses of water a day.

from the Mayo Clinic website:
"If you're an average adult, every day you lose more than 10 cups (close to 2.5 liters) of water simply by sweating, breathing and eliminating waste."

I remember when I first started walking as a form of excercise a year ago. It was as if the nuts'n'bolts were all rusty. But then, once past that, I was able to walk long distances in very little time and not break a sweat.

On my brother's wedding he noticed that I lost weight, too. I also had more energy and simply felt great.

Try walking. It's low impact and, with an MP3 or CD player, it's entertaining when you get that rhythm going.
