Hi Tom....I like Van Zandt - "Get Right With The Man" CD, especially the songs "Help Somebody" and "I Can't Help Myself". We played "I Can't Help Myself" at my sister's memorial. She died from this thing on Jan 15th of this year. She had 2 1/2 months of sobriety this time and it only took a few weeks of relapse to take her out. Her name was Sheila and I still miss her terribly.

Gravity... John Mayer, from "Continuum"

JOHN MAYER LYRICS

"Gravity"

Gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down

Oh I'll never know what makes this man
With all the love that his heart can stand
Dream of ways to throw it all away

Oh Gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down

Oh twice as much aint twice as good
And can't sustain like a one half could
It's wanting more
That's gonna send me to my knees
[repeat]

Oh gravity, stay the hell away from me
And gravity has taken better men than me (Now how can that be?)

Just keep me where the light is
Just keep me where the light is
Keep you all where the light is
Just keep us where the light is
Ohh.. where the light is! [repeat]

Gravity lyrics - APC (Theme- Sick and tired of being sick and tired and surrender)

"Lost again, broken and weary
unable to find my way
tail in hand, dizzy and clearly
unable to just let this go

I am surrendering to gravity and the unknown
catch me, heal me,
lift me back up to the sun
I choose to live...

I fell again, Like a baby
Unable to stand on my own
Tail in hand, dizzy and clearly
Unable to just let this go

I am surrendering to gravity and the unknown
Catch me, heal me
Lift me back up to the sun
I choose to live...
I choose to live...
I choose to live...

Catch me, heal me
Lift me back up to the sun
Help me survive the bottom

Calm these hands before they
Snare another pill and
Drive another nail down
Another needy hole
please release me

I am surrendering to the gravity and the unknown
Catch me heal me
lift me back up to the sun
I choose to live...
I choose to live..."

Pet Lyrics - APC (Theme- addiction talking to a recovering addict)

"Don't fret precious I'm here, step away from the window
Go back to sleep

Lay your head down child
I won't let the boogeyman come

Counting bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Pay no mind to the rabble
Pay no mind to the rabble

Head down, go to sleep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Pay no mind what other voices say
They don't care about you, like I do, like I do
Safe from pain and truth and choice and other poison devils,
See, they don't give a **** about you, like I do.

Just stay with me, safe and ignorant,
Go back to sleep
Go back to sleep

Lay your head down child
I won't let the boogeyman come
Count the bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Pay no mind to the rabble
Pay no mind to the rabble

Head down, go to sleep to the rhythm of the war drums

I'll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and all your demons

I'll be the one to protect you from
A will to survive and a voice of reason

I'll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and your choices son
They're one in the same
I must isolate you
Isolate and save you from yourself

Swayin to the rhythm of the new world order and
Count the bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums

The boogeymen are coming
The boogeymen are coming

Keep your head down, go to sleep, to the rhythm of a war drums

Stay with me
Safe and ignorant
Just stay with me
Hold you and protect you from the other ones
The evil ones
Don't love you son,
Go back to sleep"

THese are my 2 favorite songs off the CD I mentioned earlier....but the WHOLE CD rocks!!!!

Seconded!

I don't know how inspirational this song is, as a whole...but the bolded line below always gets my determination going each time I hear it...it sends shivers down my spine!

Scar Tissue ~ Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Scar tissue that I wish you saw
Sarcastic mister know-it-all
Close your eyes and I'll kiss you cause
With the birds I'll share
With the birds I'll share
This lonely view
With the birds I'll share
This lonely view

Push me up against the wall
Young Kentucky girl in a push-up bra
Fallin' all over myself
To lick your heart and taste your health 'cause
With the birds I share
With the birds I share this lonely view and
With the birds I share this lonely view and
With the birds I share this lonely view

Blood loss in a bathroom stall
Southern girl with a scarlet drawl
Wave good-bye to ma' and pa' 'cause
With the birds I'll share
With the birds I'll share
This lonely view
With the birds I'll share
This lonely view

Soft spoken with a broken jaw
Step outside but not to brawl
And Autumn's sweet we call it fall
I'll make it to the moon if I have to crawl and
With the birds I'll share
This lonely view and
With the birds I'll share this lonely view and
With the birds I'll share this lonely view

Great topic! I find that there are so many songs relating to the disease of addiction and not nearly enough relating to recovery from it...

Anyhoo...

My initial picks would be:

Needle and the Damage Done -- Neil Young (m'wife recently asked how I'd interpret the line "...but every junkie's like a setting sun" and I replied, "They're beautiful... but they fade away")

She Talks To Angels -- Black Crowes

Prince Of Darkness -- Indigo Girls

Cold Turkey -- John Lennon

Sister Morphine -- Rolling Stones

Feelin' Alright -- Joe Cocker / Traffic

jessica by the allman brothers. its instrumental but absolutely beautiful. the piano solo is incredible but the guitar solo is just jaw-dropping. overwhelming pure and soulful. i get down on my knees and listen to it and thank God for the creatively he has instilled in certain human beings. its very powerful and certainly a power greater than myself.

It'd be nice if someone made some sort of compilation and we could download it...

That would be fantastic!

I'm far from computer savvy...but if each of us had a song to contribute in MP3 format, surely there's a way (and a place?) to collect them all together? Beyond my expertise, though, I'm afraid...but I do think that would be great!

Just wanted to add, "Surrendering" by Alanis Morissette:

you were full and fully capable
you were self sufficient and needless
your house was fully decorated in that sense

you were taken with me to a point
a case of careful what you wish for
but what you knew was enough to begin

and so you called and courted fiercely
so you rached out, entirely fearless
and yet you knew of reservation and how it serves

and I salute you for your courage
and I applaud your perseverance
and I embrace you for your faith in the face of adversarial forces
that I represent

so you were in but not entirely
you were up for this but not totally
you knew how arms length-ing can maintain doubt

and so you fell and you're intact
so you dove in and you're still breathing
so you jumped and you're still flying if not shocked

and I support you in your trusting
and I commend you for your wisdom
and I'm amazed by your surrender in the face of threatening forces
that I represent

you found creative ways to distance
you hid away from much through humor
your choice of armor was your intellect

and so you felt and you're still here
and so you died and you're still standing
and so you softened and you're still safely in command

self protection was in times of true danger
your best defense to mistrust and be wary
surrendering a feat of unequalled measure
and I'm thrilled to let you in
overjoyed to be let in in kind

Like you were dying by Tim McGraw

Oh and a personal favorite of mine is this one..............

Drinkin Bone by Tracy Byrd

Well it's Friday evenin' six o'clock
And all my friends are twistin' off
I'm at the house just turnin' on T.V.
And they all wonder why I’ve changed
How many times must I explain
It's basic honk y tonk anatomy

The drinkin' bone is connected to the party bone
The party bone's connected to the stayin' out all night long
And she won't think it's funny
And I'll wind up all alone
And the lonely bone's connected to the drinkin' bone

Hey two plus two is always four
And down is south and up is north
Thirty-two degrees is freezing cold
You play with fire you end up burned
The early-bird gets the worm
But the only thing you really need to know
Is...

The drinkin' bone is connected to the party bone
The party bone's connected to the stayin' out all night long
And she won't think it's funny
And I'll wind up all alone
And the lonely bone's connected to the drinkin' bone

Hey sing it with me
Let's make sure you know....

The drinkin' bone is connected to the party bone
The party bone's connected tot he stayin' out all ngiht long
And she won't think it's funny
And I'll wind up all alone
And the lonely bone's connected the the....

The drinkin' bone is connected to the party bone
The party bone's connected to the stayin' out all night long
And she won't think it's funny
And I'll wind up all alone
And the lonely bone's connected to the drinkin' bone
