Meditate.
Read a good book.
Meditate.
Take a bubble bath, with lighted candles or incense and music playing.
Meditate.
Dance in the shower.
Meditate.
Cook a good meal, chopping lots of fresh vegetables and herbs.
Meditate.
Sit on my porch and watch the birds.
Meditate.
Hang wind chimes outdoors and in (they tinkle when the wind blows in an open window)
Meditate.
Have a meal alone in public and people watch.
Meditate.
Care for plants, indoors and out.
Meditate.
Write.
Meditate.
Play music.
Meditate.
Sing in the car.
Meditate.
Go to bookstores and browse.
Meditate.

There's a short list. Almost anything can be meditative, even something I don't particularly like to do. Like cooking dinner...sometimes, that can feel like a chore, but if I concentrate on the act, meditating while I'm doing it, I can free my mind of worries and just live in that moment.

We all have to find what works for us. What do you like to do, Cheryl? What would you like to try?

Peace & Love,
Sugah

I know this sounds silly but I'm in the process of finding out what I like. It kind of feels like I'm just coming back to life after a long, deep sleep. Everything is so new again. I'll probably try different things until I find what works for me.

Definitely meditation though. That has always helped me.

This thread has inspired me to dust off my old Kwan Yin and get back to what I was doing before the storm. Girl interrupted indeed.

There are good books on relaxation exercises, and a lot of techniques. I meditate and that helps, and I do some chi gung and and relaxation technique. I also get acupuncture. I used to get a massage once in a while.

Part of it is learning to go beyond instant gratification, and losing a lot of unrealistic expectations, like in the Serenity Prayer. I also had to deal with family issues a lot through therapy and other means, which was stressful, but had a great payoff. Nutrition makes a big difference too; sugar and caffeine were much more trouble than I realized.

It helps to have an open mind and be curious, and see where it takes you.

This not might work for everyone - it actually seems a bit weird.

But I LOVE planning holidays - even if I'll never get the chance to go on them, I love getting travel brochures from the travel agencies and just flip through them and plan what I'd do and where I'd stay I love tropical island holidays (LOVE LOVE LOVE) so I could sit there and look at those kinda pictures all day long. NOthing relaxes me more!!!

working out. losing myself totally in music doing something physical. i'll get on a treadmill or elliptical and just go. or run or jump rope or dance. my mind goes to autopilot and i work whatever my stress is out until my body is tired.

i almost lost my mind last friday when blindsided with bad news and did not know how to cope--so i went on the elliptical until the height of my craziness passed over.

that's what works for me. good luck experimenting and hope you find something! hugs to you ****{hope4}}}

Cheryl....I'm in the same place as you right now. I'm really just beginning to find out what I enjoy. Drugs took away that part of my life it feels like. My hobbies, my passions....they were all replaced by my addiction. Cocaine and everything else became my hobby pretty much.

Here are some things that I've really learned to go back to:
Pick up a good book and read as much as you want
Listen to some music you enjoy
Watch a movie with friends
KNIT!!! (Yes....HunnyBee got me knitting earlier this year )
Go to a park....or even just walk around your college campus for awhile. I used to do that as well.

I starting reading a book today and it did relax me!! It was so awesome. It has been so long since I just picked up a book and started reading! (Well, besides my books for school, lol)

It felt great to just read for pleasure. Something simple yet something that brings me great joy!

Im so pleased your starting to look for things to fill the time as its one of the Biggy's in Recovery 'Bordom'...!
You have to try n fill your time with good things n thoughts. Unless you can sit there all day n drive yourself round the bend out of not nowing were to put yourself...! Thats how it is or me sometimes anyhow...!
