Four more days in the hospital...
this time with peri-ocular cellulitis (an infection of the cells around the eye). This, too, caused by a reaction to my anti-thyroid medication, which caused my white blood cell count and platelets to fall so low that I became neutropenic and folks at the hospital and visitors had to wear masks in my presence. Apparently, only 1% of folks taking anti-thyroid medications have this reaction, and I'm in that lucky 1%.
I've been given a series of shots to force my body to produce new bone marrow and thus new white blood cells and it seems to be working, as my numbers are climbing.
I've been taking antibiotics since Sunday, but my eye looks like something out of creature feature and my vision is so cloudy all I can see are large forms and light. I'm trying not to have a pity party for myself, but perhaps a good cry would do me some good.
I've missed so much at SR since reading is very difficult at the moment, but most of all I've missed all of you.

We've all missed you too (((((FD))))). I'm sorry to hear about this, but it sounds like you are well on your way to recovery!! With those types of odds, you should have someone pick you up a Lotto ticket .

Yep, that's it, Judy. How'd you know?
And speaking of the lottery, I won the local lottery about five years ago. Only $5,000, but that's still a good chunk of change. Haven't played since. Perhaps it's time to play again.

I am very sorry this is happening with you (((FD))). I don't like what modern science thinks they are doing to the endrocrine system. I could rant but, I am not going to. Feel better (((FD)))

Im so sorry to hear your struggling. Not to worry we will be here anytime you can log on, but we do miss you too!
Take care of you and relax! Sounds like its just a matter of time now before they get you fixed up. You could start a new trend though... maybe an eye patch that looks like one of those big sunglasses???

FD!!! I didn't know you were in the hospital. I've been away for a while. I'm sorry to hear about this....I'm saying a special prayer for you, and sending a big hug your way.

FD ... Miss you and love you!!!
How have the tests turned out regarding the thyroid problem? Any results yet? We're all pulling for you here. FD, please let us know any support you need. Do you have family and friends standing close by? Jeesh - here I go with all my questions while you're so ill. Take care, FD - I love you! I'll keep praying for a speedy recovery.

It sounds awful - but as usual your personality shines through!! I hope all goes well and we'll all be thinking of you.
Well, first let me say I'm sorry you are going through all this. How awful for you. I hope this all gets straightened out and you get back to feeling like your old self and feeling better soon.
Neupogen is a relatively new drug they use with cancer patients (maybe 15 years old) who lose bone marrow and white blood cells due to chemotherapy. After my son's chemo, we had to give him 2 shots a day once his white cell count started dropping. When he was going to have his stem cells harvested, he got neupogen shots for about 2 weeks until his white count was in the hundred thousand range.
At one time, when neupogen was a new drug, it used to cost $1000 per shot and insurance companies didn't cover it. Now I think it's basically accepted to give to patients to raise their white cell count.

(((FD))) Ugh.that sounds nasty! I'm glad you got to the bottom of what was going on and help is on it's way.
Scarey stuff when that count gets low. My mom used to have lots of trouble with that when she was having radiation/chemo but in those days that particular medicine was not available and it was a very slow process to build the white count, etc, back up. Glad you have a quicker remedy and that you will be feeling better very soon!
