Where to start? PTSD, GAD, etc.

Hi all,

I introduced myself in the Newcomers area under a post called "I'm here!". But because I'm new, it won't let me post a link to these posts.

I just don't know where to go from here. I have PTSD and many related maladies, including binge drinking. I have good medical assistance. I have good family support. But, I'm a long way from where I want to be.

Way too many of my friends and relatives are gone, some due to violence in their careers, but many by their own will. Some died fast, some died slow -- from the effects of drugs and alcohol trying to tame the demons.

I love life way too much to have this happen to me. But, I'm concerned. Real concerned. Unfortunately, over the last 2-3 years, binge drinking has become a problem.

I'm 65. I'm a U.S. military veteran, but not a combat veteran, and I found out that I don't qualify for VA assistance (however -- a few months ago, I made it through Social Security Disability in about three weeks, without any questions.) I stayed in the "business" as a civilian for nearly 40 years after serving six years in the military. I retired on disability several months ago.

I'd really like to connect with others who have been in multiple situations where they felt they would never come out alive, or when their friends came out wounded, seriously afflicted, dead -- or not at all.

Are there sites like this for former captives, those who were close to former captives, or those who were "back home" managing captors?

Thanks,
H.

Hello, hullu. I am not a veteran but had worked for the VA as a civilian years ago and know of the difficulties veterans face.

Check out this link Where to Get Help for PTSD - NATIONAL CENTER for PTSD There are other helpful links at that site as well.

Hopefully, others will come along with additional suggestions. Wishing you well.
