12 Steps for Social Anxiety

I just wanted to let people know that there is a really great 12 Step Program for Social Anxiety Disorder.

It's called Social Anxiety Anonymous and it has 12 Step support groups for overcoming social anxiety problems (including social anxiety, social phobia, social agoraphobia, avoidant, personality disorder, shyness etc)...

It has really been a huge help for me!

Best, John M.

Feel free to also use this thread to discuss 12 Step Recovery as it applies to your Social Anxiety Problems...

Keep in mind that although everyone has some social anxiety, some of us really do have major, crippling (or at least very painful) social anxiety problems.

Best, John M.

I'm an alcoholic with Social anxiety and the 12 steps helped A LOT with the social anxiety. Strange but true. Those steps work miracles!

It's a great 12 Step program (I use it too).

But it's only a 7 year old 12 Step program and you are right, the website needs work!

It is growing fast though (the phone groups spin off a number of local groups).

But I still need A.A. though (that's my base program).

Totally agree, i tried counselling, before AA, and they sent me to social anxiety group as well...there is a huge difference between me as an alcoholic who has learned perfect social skill set for bars, clubs, casinos etc and is having to learn new behaviour in 'normal' enviroments than to someone who has, in how i would describe it as, 'real' social anxiety because ive seen that and i'm glad you got your own 12 step program...and yeah working the 12 steps of AA and continuing to do so has helped me a load with all parts of my life:-)

I have social anxiety , where is this site I don't see a link I clicked on it but nothing came up. Good to know other people share in this area as well. Social anxiety keeps me isolated and away from people.. I'm pretty lonely.

I´m sorry you´re lonely, Pinkgurl.

Finding things to do is the best way I know of beating loneliness.

Try to build up more support system and get an equal amount of rest, good diet and exercise.

Sometimes I like to enjoy my alone state. I take long walks, sometimes by the river and walk around the riverbanks in the dark.

Or I sit by the window, watching people walk by in the rain.

I find being alone gives me a chance to rest and usually I get recharged with a new energy.

Hope you feel better.

The Social Anxiety Anonymous site is back up.

(It was actually only down for a few ours but I haven't been back to this forum in a long time).

But if anybody needs it, the link is working (see post higher-up in this thread).

Actually, while I am at it, here is a link to the Social Anxiety Anonymous big book (Twelve Gentle Steps To Overcoming Social Anxiety).

It's still a work in progress, but it's available for free online and is about 2/3rds done at this point. Nevertheless a great resource loaded with good stuff on applying the 12 Steps and other tools to recovery from Social Anxiety problems.

A change in lifestyle can also help in getting out of this anxiety. A person having social anxiety needs to have a control over his eating and drinking habits. Having caffeine in drinks does make you more anxious and jittery, so avoid it. Though having drinks does calm a person\’s nerves but it has bad effects on a person\’s cognitive ability and this reduces his potential to deal with anxiety. So having caffeine and drinks should be avoided by people undergoing treatment for social anxiety.

AA helped my social anxiety but I don't think the twelve steps had anything to do with it, for me it was just the repeated practice of going into rooms full of people. People who get it when someone walks in all full of anxiety.

I think it's the same kind of thing with people who work on skyscrapers, the fear of heights may be overwhelming at first until you get used to it and start working on higher and higher floors.

In AA I would share only in small groups at first then and worked up speaking in front of bigger groups of people.
