Famous Alcoholics
My sponsor told me he was at a meeting and saw Beverly DeAngelo, (Clark Griswold's wife in the National Lampoons Vacation Movies).
He felt sorry for her. She was getting bombarded with people wanting her autograph in the meeting!

"...at the level of press, radio and films..."
This forum constitutes "publishing" which puts it under the "press" umbrella, folks...
I'm sure we've all seen famous people at meetings, (I know I have). I thought we weren't supposed to blab about it?
Just asking...

GreenTea/Miss Communicat,
Well, in my post, I have no information that any of these people were ever a part of AA, except for Chris Mullin. Chris Mullin outed himself as a sober member of AA many years ago. The rest, I got from media reports.
So ther is no violation of AA anonymity in my post, and for the same reasons, most of the other posts on this thread.

Green Tea,
Point well taken! The post as I understood it was to re-count famous people who have succeeded or are succeeding at battling their addictions. I assure you I would never post anything personnally gleened from a meeting or told to me about a meeting. Linda Carter and Betty Ford both have inspiring stories which they themselves have told.

Perhaps I was wrong about saying her name publicly. However, my point was that it's a shame a person has to get bombarded at a meeting.
I am not one that polices those on the AA traditions. I have seen too many people that do end up not practicing what they are preaching or pointing out. Nothing personal. Yes I was wrong by mentioning her name as previously stated, but I also believe it is wrong to point at a fault of others publically (aka calling one out).
Sorry.
Tom

Not just a number!!!!!!
Ernest Hemingway - 2 July 1961, writer (on a list of "famous dead alcoholics").
I'm not sayin' Hemingway wouldn't have been better off not drinking but he wouldn't have been Hemingway had he been a sober and serene man.
I read Hemingway and I can feel the drunk inside me aching for a drink; the situations so plausible, the emotions so real, the reactions so true to life.
Really, though, I am forever indebted to that "alcoholic" who forever encapsulated an era with prose so sharp that it still cuts deep into this "alcoholic's" soul.
It might have been alcoholism that drove him to put that gun in his mouth and pull the trigger, it might have been something else.
We'll never know.

Anthony Kedis (really inspiring autobiography 'scar tissue') so many others! Like us, pretty inspiring!!! Stephen King is awesome, so is Robin WIlliams. Elton John apparently has v strong recovery too.
I'll add Gene Simmons of KISS and Steven Tyler from Aerosmith. Actually, I believe all of Aerosmith is clean and sober. I am sure it's difficult to tour and still continue that rock & roll lifestyle sober. I think they set a great example that it can be done & still be fun!
