Is there such a thing as an AA Counselor?
Like: I know about marriage counselors and personal coach counselors. But is there a counselor specifically for alcohol related problems? It seems to be hard to find an AA meeting near me and I am really really shy and don't want to sit in front of all those people, not to mention I don't think I could talk one on one for an hour. Are there psychologists who take part in this kind of therapy?
Thanks,
Jenni

There are many addiction specialists.... ask your doctor.
None are sponsored by AA...it is aginst our policy.
What they recommend as to a recovery program is their choice.
Call and ask.
There are hundreds of AA meetings in your area.
You already have that info.
Take care,,,

CBT is excellent......cognitive behavioral therapy is awesome IMO.........without retraining your thinking most therapy's/programs of recovery will have limited help for ya..IMO....
Call a few psychologists in your area...I am sure some deal with addiction! I would like to be an online LCDC(licensed chemical dependency counselor) one day....offer one on one counselling online......
****{Jenni}}}} Good luck to you my dear.there IS help....and hope. Don't give up!

If you cant face a one-on-one or sit in a group alone may i surgest phone the local AA and explain on the phone to the member what the problem is and i'm sure (as we in SA do this) that 10min before a meeting a member will meet you and do a quike chat then walk you into the meeting so you dont feel like a stanger to all the members.

Like inland said, call ahead, and someone will be glad to meet with you.
If your looking for someone who specializes in alcohol and substance abuse you'll be wanting to look for an Addiction counselor/therapist, sometimes called Master Addiction Therapist/Counselors.

no counselors in AA. some people think they are, so be wary of asking for advice in an open AA meeting. but no, AA has no professional class. Some AA members are counselors, but that is their job for money. we do what we do in AA for free.
There is no such thing as an AA counsellor.
However AA members can and do study to become professional "addiction counsellors."
I have seen many a eyebrow raised at meetings and Tradition thumping taking place over this one

In addition to the types of counselors listed above there are also CDAC's. (Certified Drug & Alcohol Counselors). As stated above, there is no such thing as an AA counselor.
Good luck finding your way out!
