Unhappy bad liver?

i'm no longer a heavy drinker but use to drink about a bottle of everclear once a month for 2 years or so. i started smoking and quit after 2 weeks when i got a pain in my right side. no med insurance but saved some money for x rays and liver test. docs say everything looks good. this pain has been in my side for over a year now and my liver levels (whatever it is they test for) are good. I've been told when your liver goes bad you can't feel pain from it?? is this true? why does it flare up after a night of drinking? what the heck is this danged pain in the right side just below the bottom of my ribs and across to the center of my stomach?? anyone ever experience this? if you have any guesses or ideas could you send them my way please.

Hey there Broke...
A warm welcome to SR...

Well.. I'm not a doctor... but I have slept in a Executive Holiday Inn.... so..... ;o)

Do you have any other symptoms.. ??
abdominal fullness or bloating...?
Unexplained weight loss.
Breast swelling in males.
Loss of appetite.
Intestinal bleeding and
Blood clotting problems, bruises on the skin.
Weakness...??

I know it's a worry...

Hey Broke welcome to SR.

Years ago when I was still drinking I develeped a myserious pain in the left side of my abdomen. It lasted for months but various tests came up negative.

To this day I never found it what caused that pain.

If your pain only appears whenever you drink then it seems to me you already have some vital information on what might be contributing to your discomfort.

Do some Googling on Gall Bladders and Gall Bladder attacks.

Then ask your doctor if you recognize some of the symptoms.

JMHO

Love and (((((to all))))),

I was convinced for ages that i had chronic liver disease. A history of drug addiction, hep C and a pain in the region of my liver all had me totally sure of it. I didnt seek a doctor's advice i just sat at home and felt miserable about the damage i'd done to myself. Eventually i decided to get it checked out and presented myself to my Doctor telling him that i had chronic liver disease and was ready to deal with it with a specialist. The Doctor listens politely, takes lots of bloods, and sends me off for a scan. Transpires that my liver is fine and i only have gallstones. Gallstones seem a pretty minor problem in relation to a rotting liver! The moral of this story is....avoid self diagnosis and go check it out with a doctor.

And of course drinking will aggravate any medical conditions in this area liver or otherwise as you clearly already know.

I thought "gall bladder" when I read this. Other thing may be your pancrease is inflamed.

Hope you will go see a doc and find out what it is!

Sure sounds like gall bladder inflammation or stones.

Does the pain radiate to your back? Is the pain deep? When you press on the area on the affected area do you feel pain, or when you release the pressure (rebound tenderness)?

Experience any weight loss?

Are your stools light in color?

Answers will help your doc to diagnose the problem. If I were he, I'd order a GI series, but I'm not a doc . . .

Feel better soon.

Ask your doctor about taking Milk Thistle (herb sold in health food stores). It's proven to aid the liver in many ways.
