Hi Watson,
I wish I could remember how many times I caved in to alcohol before I finally
realized that it was just too much for me to fight alone. The last time I drank
ended in me asking to be taken to detox where I spent a week. When I got out,
I went right to a meeting. This was the first time that it was for me. I got
serious about my recovery and did all the things that everyone had been telling
me to do. That is, go to meetings, get a sponsor, work the steps, work with other
alcoholics and find a relationship with my God.
Since I became sober, eighteen months ago today, there have only had two times
where I really thought about drinking. In both cases, I thought it through. I
did not confine my thinking to just the drink that I was romancing. I carried
it through to what would happen if I drank and the powerlessness that I have
where alcohol is concerned. And most of all I prayed and asked for help.
There is an old Chinese proverb that states "If we do not change our direction,
we are likely to end up where we are headed". The proverb takes on a prophetic
meaning when I apply it to my alcoholism.
Watson, I wish you all the best. Just remember, take it one day at a time.
Take care.

Falling down
2 years and three treatment centers is what it took for me. The Big Book say's that "the same man will drink again". The drinking is a symptom of what is really wrong. AA can help you get to the root of your problem. You can find out why we alcoholics try to "medicate" all of our problems away. I look at it like a weed in the garden. If you just pull it out from above ground, it will come back, usually bigger and more quickly each time. (Dry drunk) But if we dig and get down to the root and them remove it, there is a greater chance it will not come back. (Work the program). I am glad you are back. Failure only truly occurs when we cease to try. Relapse is commonly refered to a "research" in the program of AA. Almost all of us must find out for sure if we are truly alcoholic. After enough times, if we don't die or end up behind bars, we will get to a point of jumping off. We will have no choice but to surrender to the fact that you cannot turn a pickle back into a cucumber. I can promise you this. If you truly work the 12 step program, your life WILL get better. If not, AA can gladly give you back your misery. Good luck and God's speed to you.

Watson I hate to say this, but I am going to. You sound like you think you are in control.
I tried to fool myself into that way of thinking. All the time it was the drink that had the control of me. I am in a life or death situation. For me to pick up a drink again, means only death in the end. I can't afford to think that I'll try again tomorrow, or next week. Tomorrow or next week may not come for me. Sure the doors of A.A. may swing both ways. But I have to make it back to them alive in order to get in. There are many a dead alcoholics in the grave now that wished they could make it back to A.A.
I don't wish to add to that population. I like who I am today and how my life is today. So I think I'll stay put, just for today.

I hope I never know what it's like to fall down (drink again). I may not have another chance to get back up.
Sounds to me like you have a cavalier attitude about drinking. Judging by what you've posted so far Watson, I don't think you've hurt enough.
Hope you come back.
