You mean these links?

SMART Recovery
http://www.smartrecovery.org

LifeRing Secular Recovery
http://www.unhooked.com

SOS - Secular Organisations for Sobriety
http://www.secularsobriety.org

Rational Recovery
http://www.rational.org

Women for Sobriety (I'm assuming, Dave, that you don't qualify, but there's some great reading material there)
http://womenforsobriety.org/

If you need any links about AA material, I (or someone) can provide those. The Big Book is available online. And there are web sites devoted to what you might call hostile analysis of AA.

Another thing to do is read about the science of addiction. Or peruse web sites like Stanton Peele's where you'll find summaries and analysis about addiction treatment:
http://www.peele.net/

As for the 5 pm heebie-jeebies, my practice in early sobriety was to do some window-shopping, go to a magazine kiosk, spend a half hour or so at the video store, walk in our local park, stop at the local gourmet coffee store, reward myself with some fancy ice cream, go to our farmer's market, take the 'country' route home--fill the time with a change in my former daily routine, just to break the pattern. Planning for those old drinking times is really important.

Dave, you could always take your gf for a walk(with or without a leash), or join a health club and exercise your ass off, before or after the AA meeting.

hey, the whole sort of illusion of addiction
is that as we crave the drink / drug more and more
we lose our perspective for pleasure
so much so
that the only thing we enjoy is drinking
so
it takes a long time
and
a lot of effort
to re-establish our outlook on a good time

the nights used to be hard for me, too
so i made 2 meetings a night for a long time

best
