O'Doul's Non-Alcoholic Brew

Okay, so on Day 9 of sobriety, I arrive at the cabin knowing the liquor cabinet would be well stocked. I overcame that temptation by calling a support person, & talked on the phone whilst pouring said booze down the drain.

However, I've been admiring the three O'Doul's still in the fridge.

Any harm in those.....any advice ?

I don't know what it is, but from your post my guess is non-alcoholic beer or wine.

If that's the case, I personaly wouldn't touch them. I don't drink alcohol, and I don't drink anything that pretends to be either.

The harm? Those around me would smell the drink but not know if there was any alcohol in it. I could easily move on from no-alcohol to low alcohol drinks, and from there back to the drunken maddness I have fought so hard to escape from.

For me sobriety has to be all or nothing.

Detached,

I have no experience on non alcohol beverage except they taste yucky and you have to drink about 100 of them to get rid of the temptation you are experiencing...I say....leave it alone. You and I got sober on the same day.

Hang in there.

Wow! Between the two of us, we have almost 20 days of sobriety. Good for us!! After reading your post, and Another One's, I decided to dump those fake beers.....no sense "pretending" that I'm still a drinker. Tonight I treated myself to a Peanut Buster Parfait at the Dairy Queen. First time I've had one of those in 30 years. Looks like the times really are a changin.

Congrats, Detached and BikerPrincess, I am now going on day 7. It seems like yesterday when I wrote my day 1 post. The 3 of us are all close in days sober, let's keep it rolling! Detached I do have to agree with abstaining from even N/A beer, it actually does have a tiny amount of alcohol in it. Kudos on dumping the booze to me that is a huge step! Peace to all!

10 Days

Hey Larry, congrats to all 3 of us. My first four days of self-detox took it out of me. During the 4 day weekend, I had no energy, had to nap every day, etc. I was sleeping real well and dreaming for the first time in years.

Now I have all this energy, after only 10 days sober. It is way cool.....haven't felt like this in a long time. I took 3 walks today, and cooked myself dinner, instead of going out. I'm likin this alot.

(Except for the part about washing dishes) !

Detached, Larry and bikerprincess,

Congrats to all of you for every minute of every day

Kind of on the same subject I was given some good advice when I first got sober by a guy in AA. He told me not to seek replacements for the alcoholic drinks I used to take. He said to just drink what I liked to drink anyway. This helped a lot.
At that point my wife was buying all sorts of stuff like grape and cranberryjuice to have at meals instead of wine. I never enjoyed them and I felt cheated because I couldn't have the wine. Now I drink water, lemonade or diet coke. That's what I drank and enjoyed all through my alcohol drinking years, so that's what I drink now.

Bye for now

Michael

Juice

Thank you for your sound advice and I think you are right. I drink alot of diet coke, which I would like to replace with water. The other night when I went to my Christmas party someone suggested juice and when I had a glass I couldn't help but think it would have tasted better with Vodka..... I never mixed with water or diet...hence I don't miss the booze so much.

I have noticed however that I am smoking more cigs...any advice there?

Non-alcoholic beer, is just what it says it is. It's for
the non-alcoholic person. It'll take you places you
don't want to go. Kinda sucks when regular
beer is a buck and O'douls is still 2.50,(at a bar).

BLESSINGS & HUGS,
Vinnie

Smoking is something I have never done, thank God! Probably something to do with having both parents and three older brothers all smoking in a small house when I was a child. I probably pasivelly smoked more then than most people manage who do it themselves.

Take Care

For me - abstinance means that - no alcohol or drugs at all -
just because it says Non alcoholic means NOTHING as it does indeed contain alcohol - so for this gal - it is martinelli's sparkling cider -

I personally enjoy being C&S today and would not put the 3000+ days I have in jeopardy for something that is called non-alcoholic.

Just my 2 cents for the day...

oh. detatched, i'm glad to hear you poured it out and are doing well. And the ice cream idea was perfect. I used to get 2 huge sundaes in a row at Friendly's while quoting a page in AA's big book about how sugar was very good for people having cravings for alcahol. It is! it really is, it feeds that part of the system, since so much of alcohol is sugar. Keep it up - and remember, you only have to do this one day at a time, and never alone!

Good replies...I like that its non alcoholic so for non alcoholics....
It does contain alcohol and it does taste yuky. If I am going to drink I am going to drink the real McCoy. I believe in the Phenomina of Craving theory of AA. Ihave come to far to set myself up for the Big Bang. I always go back to my drug of choice...and to play with alcohol is like playing with a loaded gun...

When I get to these stinking thinking stages I always say maybe tommorow...Then Tommorow comes and I say maybe tommorow...it works for me. But in between I get on the phone, pray, go to meetings, do my 10th 11th and 12ths step...so when the next day comes or many times before my sanity is again restored. It is insane thinking to think I can drink anything again....But then again my disease is one that tells me I do not have a disease....and I know its way more powerful than any of my best thinking. For me God could and would if he were sought.....

You did good talking about it...the thought is not a slip...but without the tools we have we have no mental defense against that first drink.

This is how it works...and another alcoholic has proven it to be so...Thank you.

THROW THE O DOULS OUT. ACTUALLY I BELIEVE
THERE IS A SLIGHT AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL IN THEM"
PLUS YOU NEED TO GET AWAY FROM ANYTHING THAT
IS OR PRETENDS TO BE ALCOHOL.

LEMONADE, ICE TEA, THEY ARE ALL GOOD, OR
IF YOU PREFER GOOD OLE PEPSI, OR COKE. ME
PERSONALLY I STAY AWAY FROM THE CAFFEINE.
I KNOW THEY SERVE COFFEE AT ALL MEETINGS,
BUT ME PERSONALLY NEED AWAY FROM CAFFEINE
TOO. GOD BLESS AND GOOD LUCK. THROW THEM OUT.
I WOULD
