advice
Just wanted to ask a few questions about how detox would work for a family member who is not sure they need it. We all know he needs it, and there was finally an episode to where he realizes something is up....but not sure if it a "problem" too complicated to explain the whole story. It has been going on for 15 years :-(

He has to want it in order for it to work. If he detoxes becasue the family is asking him to he is probably going to do it butthen use right away behind your backs. That is the sick way of thinking with an addict

Hello...
Welcome to SR.
I am sorry you are in this situation. It is so very hard to see a loved one suffer.
Sadly...there is nothing I know of that will be effective unless he is willing.
However there is a program for you and other family members. Have you heard of Alanon?
Please check out the Friends and Family section here for info and support.
Blessings to all of you...

I think it would be a waste of time and money, sad to say. But it wouldn't hurt to express how you're feeling about what happened. There's no need to bottle up your feelings (no pun intended) about this. A lot of families avoid talking to the drinker/user because everything is ruled by fear and anxiety.
I imagine a little support from others could help. SR has a Friends and Family forum (AlAnon, basically) here:

SMART Recovery has a forum for family and friends here:

Take care, and thanks for posting,
Don S
