6 months yesterday
Hi all,
I haven't been on this board for a week or so but just wanted to catch up and let people know that if I can go 6 months without a drink, anyone can.
Nowadays I virtually have no urges to drink, although I know that if I started again the old urges would come back fast and I'd be back in the gutter before I knew it. The only times I do feel like a drink is sometimes during a party, after a couple of hours. So I try not to stay at parties longer than this - 3 hours at the most. Last night I had someone at a party tell me I was a weirdo for not drinking. They actually uttered these words slack jawed and slurring. They also informed me they had got smashed Thursday night and had felt the worst hangover in the world on Friday. This story was relayed as if something to be proud of! I just smiled and felt sorry for them, I actually do quite like this person generally. They will have spent today feeling like cra*, whereas I have had a happy and productive day. So they might have had some semblance of fun at the party last night, somewhere in between the third and fifth drink but I now know the benefits of not drinking so far outweigh the benefits of drinking.
I used to be the sort of person who bragged about boozy nights. Now I sit on the other side of the fence and the view from here is so much better.
take care all

Then, did they hug you, tell you they re-shpect you, and then try to pick a fight with you?
Congratulations, and thanks for the update, Lawry!

LAwry,
Well done on your six months, a magnificent achievment. I am a little less than a month behind you and I sincerely hope we remain a month apart from here on in.
I loved your story about the comment at the party, I had a similar incident at a work "do" a few weeks ago when someone urged me to drink because it would make me "happy". At the time the person concerned (my boss's wife) was extremely "happy".
The last I heard of her she was being poured into a taxi. I wonder how happy she was next day.
Best wishes
Michael
